Data report on career adaptability, personal value, and motivational interview among at-risk Chinese college students.

ABSTRACT: The dataset provided here was partially associated with a published article on career adaptability [1]. The data set included 343 college freshmen who had difficulties in career decision-making. A self-report questionnaire on career adaptability (concern, control, curiosity, confidence), personal values (materialistic values, self-transcendence values, self-enhancement values), and demographic information was administered to all participants. In addition, a pre-selection of low career adaptability was performed. These participants scored below the 27th percentile in career adaptability. The career adaptability was administrated again two months later. We divided the data into two groups (intervention and control) and two time points (pre-test and post-test). Researchers can use the data to explore the relationship among career adaptability, personal values, and demographic information, as well as to compare interventions on career adaptability.

Risk perception of coronavirus disease 2019 and career adaptability among college students: the mediating effect of hope and sense of mastery.

Project description:The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has not only caused widespread economic recession but also had a serious negative impact on the employment of college students. However, little is known about the relationship and mechanisms between the risk perception of COVID-19 and career adaptability. This study aimed to examine whether the risk perception of COVID-19 is associated with career adaptability directly and indirectly through hope and a sense of mastery in college students. A questionnaire survey was conducted among 594 Chinese college students aged 16 to 25, who completed assessments on risk perception of COVID-19, career adaptability, hope, and sense of mastery. The results showed that susceptibility was negatively associated with career confidence, control, and curiosity; moreover, susceptibility indirectly affected career adaptability (including concern, confidence, control, and curiosity) through the sense of mastery; uncontrollable indirectly affected career concern through hope; and uncontrollable indirectly affected career adaptability (including concern, confidence, control, and curiosity) through hope and the sense of mastery. The findings emphasize the role of hope and a sense of mastery in the career adaptability of college students and reveal the necessity of improving hope and a sense of mastery to promote college students' career development. The relationships among career adaptability, career commitment, career identity, and career well-being in Chinese nursing undergraduates: A longitudinal study.

Project description:Exploring the longitudinal relationship between career adaptability, career commitment, career identity, and career well-being among Chinese undergraduate nursing students. A mediation effect analysis was performed. The Career Adaptability Scale, the Chinese version of Career commitment, the Career identity Scale, and the Career well-being Scale were used as research instruments. Six hundred ninety-two nursing students were followed up in two waves to explore the relationships among career adaptability, career commitment, career identity, and career well-being. Model comparison was performed to explore the differences in such relationships between low and high-career interests. Career commitment at T1 mediated the relationship between career adaptability at T1 and career identity at T2 and that between career adaptability at T1 and career well-being at T2. Significant differences were observed between the mediation models of nursing students with high and low career interests. Career commitment plays a longitudinal mediator role in the relationship between career adaptability and career identity and the relationship between career adaptability and career well-being.

Career Choice among First-Generation, Minority STEM College Students.

Project description:We qualitatively investigated ways in which undergraduates unpacked their perceptions of STEM careers after attending a seminar series that introduced them to diverse scientists. Using Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) as a guiding framework, we explored how culturally-specific realities impacted students' career choices. Our findings suggest that familial ties and cultural expectations played key roles in determining how students navigated career choice. Our results have implications for how institutions navigate career pursuit discussions with students.

How Parenting Styles Link Career Decision-Making Difficulties in Chinese College Students? The Mediating Effects of Core Self-Evaluation and Career Calling.

Project description:The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between parenting styles and career decision-making difficulties in college students, and uncovered the mediating roles of core self-evaluation and career calling. A total of 1,127 undergraduates were recruited to complete the questionnaires about parenting styles, core self-evaluation, career calling, and career decision-making difficulties. The results showed that: (1) Positive and negative parenting styles could positively predict career decision-making difficulties in college students. (2) Core self-evaluation and career calling mediated the relationship between parenting styles and career decision-making difficulties. Sequential dual mediators only found in which positive paternal and maternal parenting styles predict career decision-making difficulties through core self-evaluation and career calling. (3) Further analysis revealed gender difference in the relationship between parenting styles and career decision-making difficulties. The relation between paternal positive parenting style and career decision-making difficulties was significant in male students, but absent in female students; the relation between maternal positive parenting and career decision-making difficulties and the relation between paternal negative parenting and career calling were significant in female students, but absent in male students; and the relation between career calling and career decision-making difficulties was greater in male than in female. The current study expanded and deepened those existing understandings about the relationship between parenting styles and adolescents' career decisions, so as to further reveal its internal mechanism and provide more reasonable suggestions and targeted guidance for career counseling.

Dataset on the antecedents of career adaptability among undergraduate students in Malaysia.

Project description:This data was obtained from a cross-sectional survey of 188 final year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) students in a Malaysian Public University. The survey was self-administered to final year BBA students undergoing seminar course prior to the commencement of their industrial training in the coming semester. A regression analysis was conducted in order to assess the link between students' self-esteem, pro-active personality, and social support with their career adaptability using the Statistical Package of the Social Sciences (SPSS) 20. Specifically, this data article provides data about the participants' demographic characteristics, as well as the mean, standard deviation and reliability of the measured constructs. It is believed by the authors that the dataset will guide policy makers on the choice of predictor(s) that could boost the level of students' career adaptability, most especially during the school to work transition, in this current volatile labour market.

The role of career decision self-efficacy as a mediator of peer support on students' career adaptability.

Project description:This study aims to determine the role of career decision self-efficacy (CDSE) as a mediator of the relationship between peer support and career adaptability among college students. Furthermore, students are in a realistic period of career development, but in reality, the level of adaptability is still low because the knowledge and career guidance in Indonesia only start at the college level, or at least high school. This condition makes recent graduates experience confusion in determining careers, thereby affecting their ability to adapt. One of the most influential external factors of career adaptability is peer support, where students spend more time with friends and provide information, career suggestions, emotional support, and being role models to each other. CDSE was selected as a moderator because career adaptability can be enhanced through self-efficacy sources. The participants used were final-year college students in Indonesia (N = 538). Data was then collected using convenience sampling techniques. The instruments used in this study include Career Adapt-Abilities Scale, Career-Related Peer Support, and Career Decision Self-Efficacy-Short Form. The results showed that CDSE fully mediated peer support on adaptability (c = 0.247; p < .001). Furthermore, peer support as an external factor is inadequate to enhance career adaptability. This indicates that internal factors are needed to help students adapt to changes in the working world and career choices. Students who only obtain social support from campus friends regarding career cannot adapt when they lack the confidence to make decisions with the information and knowledge provided.

University students' career adaptability as a mediator between cognitive emotion regulation and career decision-making self-efficacy.

Project description:As modern society experiences rapid changes, the unpredictability of the labor market is increasing. University students preparing to join the workforce may experience increased anxiety and stress due to the heightened uncertainty regarding their career plans. Regulating such negative emotions and adjusting to the changing circumstances may influence their career development. Thus, the current study aimed to investigate the relationship between cognitive emotion regulation (CER) - specifically adaptive CER and maladaptive CER - and career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE), with career adaptability (CA) as a mediating factor. The path analysis model consisting of adaptive CER, maladaptive CER, CA, and CDMSE was tested with 357 Korean university students who were facing the school-to-work transition. The results of the study were as follows. First, adaptive CER was positively related to CA and CDMSE, while maladaptive CER was negatively related to CA only. Second, CA and CDMSE were positively related. Third, CA partially mediated the relationship between adaptive CER and CDMSE and fully mediated the relationship between maladaptive CER and CDMSE. Based on these results, theoretical and practical implications are proposed, and the limitations of the study are discussed.

Why UK medical students change career preferences: an interview study.

Project description:IntroductionMedical career preferences are influenced by a multitude of factors. Currently several specialties are undergoing recruitment problems; we must develop our understanding of medical career decision-making to ensure the production of an appropriate workforce. We aimed to explore the changing career preferences of students during medical school, to better understand this.MethodsThis was an interpretivist, qualitative study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with seven final-year students to explore why their career preferences had changed during medical school. Transcripts of these interviews were thematically analysed.ResultsThree overarching themes emerged from the analysis: The 'influence of medical school', 'perceived suitability to specialty' and 'belonging and fitting in'. A thematic map captured the participants' perceptions on why their preferences had changed, with major influences echoing existing research. However, novel findings included participants' personalities and enthusiasm changing over time, the need for a 'sense of belonging' and participants defining the term 'variety' uniquely, perceiving their current specialty preference to match their definition.DiscussionThis was an original, in-depth study on changing career preferences, which is an ill-defined subject within the literature. Analysis revealed preferences changed for a variety of medical school, personal and specialty reasons, leading to the construction of an updated model of medical career decision-making. Medical career preference remains a dynamic and ever-evolving phenomenon, influenced by an intricate interplay of internal and external factors. An understanding of this is crucial for future workforce planning.

The effect of career calling on medicine students' learning engagement: chain mediation roles of career decision self-efficacy and career adaptability.

Project description:The study investigates the influence of career calling on the learning engagement of medical students in higher vocational colleges, focusing on the chain mediation roles of career decision self-efficacy (CDSE) and career adaptability. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 173 students from three vocational colleges across China, utilizing various scales to measure career calling, learning engagement, career adaptability, and CDSE, and structural equation modeling was employed to analyze the survey data. Chain mediation analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between career calling and learning engagement among medical students. Career adaptability was found to partially mediate the relationship between career calling and learning engagement, while CDSE did not exhibit a significant mediating effect. However, when both career adaptability and CDSE were considered as chained mediators, they had a significant indirect effect on the relationship between career calling and learning. The findings highlight the pivotal significance of cultivating a strong career calling and augmenting career adaptability as strategic approaches to bolster learning engagement among medical students in higher vocational colleges.

The impact of career calling on higher vocational nursing students' learning engagement: The mediating roles of career adaptability and career commitment.

Project description:Learning engagement is an important predictor of academic success and a key indicator of educational quality. It has therefore attracted considerable research interest, with previous studies exploring how to enhance engagement via pedagogical approaches, strategies, and content, as well as through teacher-student interaction. However, the relationship between individual learners' internal mechanisms and learning engagement has yet to be investigated in depth. Accordingly, the present study explored the direct effects of career calling on higher vocational nursing students' learning engagement and the mediating roles of career adaptability and career commitment via a parallel mediation model. Data were collected from 388 nursing students at two higher vocational colleges in China and the hypotheses were tested using correlation and regression analyses. The results showed that career calling imparted a significant positive effect on the nursing students' engagement in learning, with career adaptability and career commitment mediating this relationship. These findings highlight the importance of promoting learning engagement among nursing students and the need to carefully design instructional activities for the healthcare profession.
