Project description:Copper(I) [Cu2(μ-Br)2(tBuImCH2pyCH2L)] n (L = OMe, NEt2, NHtBu) compounds supported by flexible functionalized NHC-based polydentate ligands have been prepared in a one-pot procedure by reacting the corresponding imidazolium salt with an excess of copper powder and Ag2O. An X-ray diffraction analysis has revealed that [Cu2(μ-Br)2(tBuImCH2pyCH2NEt2)] n is a linear coordination polymer formed by bimetallic [Cu(μ-Br)]2 units linked by the lutidine-based NHC-py-NEt2 ligand, which acts as a heteroditopic ligand with a 1κC-2κ2 N,N' coordination mode. We propose that the polymeric compounds break down in the solution into more compact tetranuclear [Cu2(μ-Br)2(tBuImCH2pyCH2L)]2 compounds with a coordination mode identical to the functionalized NHC ligands. These compounds have been found to exhibit high catalytic activity in the Cu-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. In particular, [Cu2(μ-Br)2(tBuImCH2pyCH2NEt2)]2 efficiently catalyzes the click reaction of a range of azides and alkynes, under an inert atmosphere at room temperature in neat conditions at a very low catalyst loading, to quantitatively afford the corresponding 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazole derivatives in a few minutes. The cycloaddition reaction of benzyl azide to phenylacetylene can be performed at 25-50 ppm catalyst loading by increasing the reaction time and/or temperature. Reactivity studies have shown that the activation of the polynuclear catalyst precursor involves the alkyne deprotonation by the NHC moiety of the polydentate ligand to afford a copper(I)-alkynyl species bearing a functionalized imidazolium ligand. DFT calculations support the participation of the dinuclear species [(CuBr)2(μ-tBuImCH2pyCH2NEt2)], resulting from the fragmentation of the tetranuclear compound, as the catalytically active species. The proposed reaction pathway proceeds through zwitterionic dinuclear intermediates and entails the active participation of both copper atoms, as well as the NHC moiety as an internal base, which activates the reacting alkyne via deprotonation.

Project description:Considering the versatility of oxidation states of rhodium together with the successful background of ruthenium-N-heterocyclic carbene based catalysts in olefin metathesis, it is envisaged the exchange of the ruthenium of the latter catalysts by rhodium, bearing an open-shell neutral rhodium center, or a +1 charged one. In the framework of in silico experiments, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been used to plot the first catalytic cycle that as a first step includes the release of the phosphine. DFT is, in this case, the tool that allows the discovery of the less endergonic reaction profile from the precatalytic species for the neutral catalyst with respect to the corresponding ruthenium one; increasing the endergonic character when dealing with the charged system.

Project description:This is a comprehensive study of the effects of rationally designed hemilabile ligands on the stability, reactivity, and change in catalytic behavior of indium complexes. We report cationic alkyl indium complexes supported by a family of hemi-salen type ligands bearing hemilabile thiophenyl (2a), furfuryl (2b) and pyridyl (2c) pendant donor arms. Shelf-life and stability of these complexes followed the trend 2a < 2b < 2c, showing direct correlation to the affinity of the pendant donor group to the indium center. Reactivity towards polymerization of epichlorohydrin and cyclohexene oxide followed the trend 2a > 2b > 2c with control of polymerization following an inverse relationship to reactivity. Surprisingly, 2c polymerized racemic lactide without an external initiator, likely through an alkyl-initiated coordination-insertion mechanism.

Project description:An olefin metathesis catalyst bearing a tridentate hemilabile N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand was synthesized and characterized. The solid-state crystal structure reveals coordination from all three donation sites of the NHC ligand, giving rise to a stable 18-electron complex. Catalytic activity in three standard metathesis reactions was demonstrated, revealing our catalyst to be particularly long lived and highly selective in the self-metathesis of 1-decene. Although the catalyst in this work initiates more slowly than its second-generation counterparts, it was shown to have high thermal stability, yielding peak performances at higher temperatures. The unique ligand framework of this catalyst may serve as a template for the synthesis of analogous catalysts with improved efficiencies.

Project description:This work describes the preparation of a series of platinum-aminocarbene complexes [PtCl{C(N=C a (C6R2R3R4R5CON b ))=N(H)R1}(CNR1)] a-b (8-19, 65-75% isolated yield) via the reaction of cis-[PtCl2(CNR1)2] (R1 = Cy 1, t-Bu 2, Xyl 3, 2-Cl-6-MeC6H3 4) with 3-iminoisoindolin-1-ones HN=C a (C6R2R3R4R5CON b H) (R2-R5 = H 5; R3 = Me, R2, R4, R5 = H 6; R3, R4 = Cl, R2, R5 = H 7). New complexes 17-19 were characterized by elemental analyses (C, H, N), ESI+-MS, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), one-dimensional (1H, 13C{1H}), and two-dimensional (1H,1H correlation spectroscopy (COSY), 1H,13C heteronuclear multiple quantum correlation (HMQC)/1H,13C heteronuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC), 1H,13C heteronuclear multiple bond correlation (HMBC)) NMR spectroscopy, and authenticity of known species 8-16 was confirmed by FT-IR and 1H and 13C{1H} NMR. Complexes 8-19 were assessed as catalysts for hydrosilylation of terminal alkynes with hydrosilanes to give vinyl silanes, and complex [PtCl{C(N=C a (C6H3(5-Me)CON b ))=N(H)(2-Cl-6-MeC6H3)}{CN(2-Cl-6-MeC6H3)}] a-b (18) showed the highest catalytic activity. The catalytic system proposed operates at 80-100 °C for 4-6 h in toluene and with catalyst loading of 0.1 mol %, enabling the reaction of a number of terminal alkynes (PhC≡CH, t-BuC≡CH, and 4-(t-Bu)C6H4C≡CH) with hydrosilanes (Et3SiH, Pr3SiH, i-Pr3SiH, and PhMe2SiH). Target vinyl silanes were prepared in 48-95% yields (as a mixture of α/β isomers) and with maximum turnover number of 8.4 × 103. Hydrosilylation of internal alkynes (PhC≡CPh, Me(CH2)2C≡C(CH2)2Me, and PhC≡CMe) with hydrosilanes (Et3SiH, PhMe2SiH) led to the corresponding trisubstituted silylated alkenes in 86-94% yields. Initial observations on the mechanism of the catalytic action of platinum-ADC catalysts 8-19 suggested a molecular catalytic cycle.

Project description:The reaction of Ni(COD)(2), IPr, and nitrile affords dimeric [Ni(IPr)RCN](2) in high yields. X-ray analysis revealed these species display simultaneous η(1)- and η(2)-nitrile binding modes. These dimers are catalytically competent in the formation of pyridines from the cycloaddition of diynes and nitriles. Kinetic analysis showed the reaction to be first order in [Ni(IPr)RCN](2), zeroth order in added IPr, zeroth order in nitrile, and zeroth order in diyne. Extensive stoichiometric competition studies were performed, and selective incorporation of the exogenous, not dimer bound, nitrile was observed. Post cycloaddition, the dimeric state was found to be largely preserved. Nitrile and ligand exchange experiments were performed and found to be inoperative in the catalytic cycle. These observations suggest a mechanism whereby the catalyst is activated by partial dimer-opening followed by binding of exogenous nitrile and subsequent oxidative heterocoupling.

Project description:A divergent synthesis of thioether-functionalized trifluoromethyl-alkynes, 1,3-dienes and allenes via regioselective nucleophilic addition of sulfur nucleophiles to 2-trifluoromethyl-1,3-conjugated enynes was developed. The addition patterns depend on the type of enyne, sulfur nucleophile and reaction conditions used. 1,4-Addition leading to thioether-functionalized trifluoromethyl-allenes was realized when enynes possessing electron-withdrawing aryl groups on the alkyne moiety were used as reaction partners and alkanethiols were used as nucleophiles, whereas solvent-controlled construction of thioether-functionalized 1,3-dienes and alkynes was realized, respectively, via a 3,4-addition pattern or 1,2-addition pattern if thiophenols were applied as nucleophiles. The three types of compounds containing both sulfur and fluorine elements are valuable building blocks for synthesis of multifunctional fluorinated vinyl sulfides and thiophene derivatives.

Project description:Single-molecule junctions that are sensitive to compression or elongation are an emerging class of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). Although the molecule-electrode interface can be engineered to impart such functionality, most studies to date rely on poorly defined interactions. We focused on this issue by synthesizing molecular wires designed to have chemically defined hemilabile contacts based on (methylthio)thiophene moieties. We measured their conductance as a function of junction size and observed conductance changes of up to two orders of magnitude as junctions were compressed and stretched. Localised interactions between weakly coordinating thienyl sulfurs and the electrodes are responsible for the observed effect and allow reversible monodentate⇄bidentate contact transitions as the junction is modulated in size. We observed an up to ≈100-fold sensitivity boost of the (methylthio)thiophene-terminated molecular wire compared with its non-hemilabile (methylthio)benzene counterpart and demonstrate a previously unexplored application of hemilabile ligands to molecular electronics.

Project description:A series of ruthenium catalysts bearing five-membered chelating NHC architectures that exhibit very high Z-selectivity in a variety of metathesis reactions have recently been reported. It was envisioned that catalysts possessing sixmembered chelates could similarly exhibit high Z-selectivity and address limitations of this methodology. We thus prepared a number of new catalysts and systematically investigated the impact of the NHC and anionic ligand on their stereoselectivity. In standard metathesis assays, only catalysts containing six-membered chelated NHC structures and η2-bound anionic ligands favored the Z-olefin products compared to traditional ruthenium catalysts. In addition, substitution with bulkier N-aryl groups led to improved Z-selectivity. The effect of ligand structure on stereoselectivity discovered in this study will be useful in the future design of highly active and Z-selective ruthenium catalysts.
