Project description:The large variety of structures of Zintl phases are generally well understood since their anionic substructures follow bonding rules according to the valence concept. But there are also exceptions, which make the semiconductors especially interesting in terms of structure-property relationships. Although several Na-Sn-Pnictides with a variety of structural motives are known, up to this point no ternary compound in the Na-Sn-Bi system has been described. In this paper we present the Zintl-phase Na13Sn25.73Bi1.27 comprising a complex, open-framework structure of Sn atoms, with one mixed Sn/Bi site, hosting Na atoms. An additional Bi atom is loosely connected with only weak contacts to the framework filling a larger cavity within the network. According to band structure calculations of the two ordered variants with either full occupation of the mixed site with Sn or Bi, resulting in Na13Sn26Bi and Na13Sn24Bi3, respectively, both compounds are semiconductors with band gaps of 0.5 eV. A comparison of the band structures with the structurally related binary compounds Na5Sn13 and Na7Sn12 shows that only the perfectly charge balanced Na7Sn12 is a semiconductor whereas Na5Sn13 is metallic. The rather specific electronic situation in the ternary compound is traced back to the loosely bound Bi atom, which acts as a guest atom according to Bix@Na13Sn26-yBiy, with x=1 and y=0.27, capable to change its oxidation state and thus to uptake additional electrons allowing the system to be a semiconductor. Therefore, Na13Sn25.73Bi1.27 can be understood as a rare example of an open framework structure of Sn atoms comprising Bi atoms in the cavities.

Project description:Planar tetracoordinate silicon, germanium, tin, and lead (ptSi/Ge/Sn/Pb) species are scarce and exotic. Here, we report a series of penta-atomic ptSi/Ge/Sn/Pb XB2Bi2 (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) clusters with 20 valence electrons (VEs). Ternary XB2Bi2 (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) clusters possess beautiful fan-shaped structures, with a Bi-B-B-Bi chain surrounding the central X core. The unbiased density functional theory (DFT) searches and high-level CCSD(T) calculations reveal that these ptSi/Ge/Sn/Pb species are the global minima on their potential energy surfaces. Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) simulations indicate that XB2Bi2 (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) clusters are robust. Bonding analyses indicate that 20 VEs are perfect for the ptX XB2Bi2 (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb): two lone pairs of Bi atoms; one 5c-2e π, and three σ bonds (two Bi-X 2c-2e and one B-X-B 3c-2e bonds) between the ligands and X atom; three 2c-2e σ bonds and one delocalized 4c-2e π bond between the ligands. The ptSi/Ge/Sn/Pb XB2Bi2 (X = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) clusters possess 2π/2σ double aromaticity, according to the (4n + 2) Hückel rule.

Project description:We investigate the transport properties of bulk Ca2YZ (Y = Au, Hg; Z = As, Sb, Bi, Sn and Pb) by a combination method of first-principles and Boltzmann transport theory. The focus of this article is the systematic study of the thermoelectric properties under the effect of a spin-orbit coupling. The highest dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) of Ca2AuAs at optimum carrier concentration are 1.23 at 700 K. Interestingly enough, for n-type Ca2HgPb, the maximum ZT are close to each other from 500 K to 900 K and these values are close to 1, which suggests that semimetallic material can also be used as an excellent candidate for thermoelectric materials. From another viewpoint, at room temperature, the maximum PF for Ca2YZ are greater than 3 mW m-1 K-2, which is very close to that of ∼3 mW m-1 K-2 for Bi2Te3 and ∼4 mW m-1 K-2 for Fe2VAl. However, the room temperature theoretical κ l of Ca2YZ is only about 0.85-1.6 W m-1 K-1, which is comparing to 1.4 W m-1 K-1 for Bi2Te3 and remarkably lower than 28 W m-1 K-1 for Fe2VAl at same temperature. So Ca2YZ should be a new type of promising thermoelectric material at room temperature.

Project description:A combination of anion photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations has elucidated the geometric and electronic structure of gas-phase endohedral Pt/Pb cage cluster anions. The anions, Pt@Pb₁₀⁻¹ and Pt@Pb₁₂¹⁻ were prepared from "preassembled" clusters generated from crystalline samples of [K(2,2,2-crypt)]₂[Pt@Pb₁₂] that were brought into the gas phase using a unique infrared desorption/photoemission anion source. The use of crystalline [K(2,2,2-crypt)]₂[Pt@Pb₁₂] also provided access to K[Pt@Pb(n)](-) anions in the gas phase (i.e., the K⁺ salts of the Pt@Pb(n)²⁻ anions). Anion photoelectron spectra of Pt@Pb₁₀⁻¹, Pt@Pb₁₂¹⁻, and K[Pt@Pb₁₂]¹⁻ are presented. Extensive density functional theory calculations on Pt@Pb₁₀³⁻/²⁻/¹⁻/⁰ and Pt@Pb₁₂²⁻/¹⁻ provided candidate structures and anion photoelectron spectra for Pt@Pb₁₀⁻¹ and Pt@Pb₁₂¹⁻. Together, the calculated and measured photoelectron spectra show that Pt@Pb₁₀⁻¹ and Pt@Pb₁₂²⁻/¹⁻ endohedral complexes maintain their respective D(4d) and slightly distorted I(h) symmetries in the gas phase even for the charge states with open shell character. Aside from the fullerenes, the Pt@Pb₁₂²⁻ endohedral complex is the only bare cluster that has been structurally characterized in the solid state, solution, and the gas phase.

Project description:The X-ray crystal structure of the complex between the synthetic antitumour and antiviral DNA binding ligand SN 7167 and the DNA oligonucleotide d(CGCGAATTCGCG)2 has been determined to an R factor of 18.3% at 2.6 A resolution. The ligand is located within the minor groove and covers almost 6 bp with the 1-methylpyridinium ring extending as far as the C9-G16 base pair and the 1-methylquinolinium ring lying between the G4-C21 and A5-T20 base pairs. The ligand interacts only weakly with the DNA, as evidenced by long range contacts and shallow penetration into the groove. This structure is compared with that of the complex between the parent compound SN 6999 and the alkylated DNA sequence d(CGC[e6G]AATTCGCG)2. There are significant differences between the two structures in the extent of DNA bending, ligand conformation and groove binding.

Project description:The crystal structure of tetra-wickmanite, ideally Mn(2+)Sn(4+)(OH)6 [mangan-ese(II) tin(IV) hexa-hydroxide], has been determined based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data collected from a natural sample from Långban, Sweden. Tetra-wickmanite belongs to the octa-hedral-framework group of hydroxide-perovskite minerals, described by the general formula BB'(OH)6 with a perovskite derivative structure. The structure differs from that of an ABO3 perovskite in that the A site is empty while each O atom is bonded to an H atom. The perovskite B-type cations split into ordered B and B' sites, which are occupied by Mn(2+) and Sn(4+), respectively. Tetra-wickmanite exhibits tetra-gonal symmetry and is topologically similar to its cubic polymorph, wickmanite. The tetra-wickmanite structure is characterized by a framework of alternating corner-linked [Mn(2+)(OH)6] and [Sn(4+)(OH)6] octa-hedra, both with point-group symmetry -1. Four of the five distinct H atoms in the structure are statistically disordered. The vacant A site is in a cavity in the centre of a distorted cube formed by eight octa-hedra at the corners. However, the hydrogen-atom positions and their hydrogen bonds are not equivalent in every cavity, resulting in two distinct environments. One of the cavities contains a ring of four hydrogen bonds, similar to that found in wickmanite, while the other cavity is more distorted and forms crankshaft-type chains of hydrogen bonds, as previously proposed for tetra-gonal stottite, Fe(2+)Ge(4+)(OH)6.

Project description:In the title compound, C12H12N2O2, the dihedral angle between the planes of the two pyridine rings is 5.8 (1)°. Neighbouring mol-ecules are linked via C(Me)-H⋯N inter-actions, generating a two-dimensional sheet structure; C-H⋯π inter-actions further link the mol-ecules into a three-dimensional network. An overlapped arrangement of parallel pyridine rings in neighbouring mol-ecules [centroid-to-centroid distance = 3.6655 (15) Å] is observed in the crystal structure.

Project description:Combining the core-shell structure with the optimization of surface composition and structure in the shell is a fantastic strategy to enhance the electrocatalytic performances. Here, we synthesized trimetallic Au@PtxSny core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable composition and structure of Pt-Sn alloyed shells. Impressively, the Au@PtSn core-shell NPs with hexagonal PtSn alloyed shells exhibited the highest mass activity and specific activity toward ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in alkaline electrolyte, which are 13.0 and 12.7 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C. In addition, the Au@PtSn core-shell NPs displayed the best stability compared to commercial Pt/C, with only 44.8% loss vs. 86.8% loss in mass activity after 1,000 s due to the stronger anti-poisoning ability for reaction intermediates. The theory calculations reveal that the introduction of Au core and alloying Pt with Sn both endow Pt with an appropriate d-band center, and thus effectively boosting the EOR activity.

Project description:Developing an efficient Pt-based electrocatalyst with well-defined structures for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is critical, however, still remains a challenge. Here, a one-pot approach is reported for the synthesis of Pd3Pb/Pt n Pb nanocubes with tunable Pt composition varying from 3.50 to 2.37 and 2.07, serving as electrocatalysts toward MOR. Their MOR activities increase in a sequence of Pd3Pb/Pt3.50Pb << Pd3Pb/Pt2.07Pb < Pd3Pb/Pt2.37Pb, which are substantially higher than that of commercial Pt/C. Specifically, Pd3Pb/Pt2.37Pb electrocatalysts achieve the highest specific (13.68 mA cm-2) and mass (8.40 A mgPt -1) activities, which are ≈8.8 and 6.8 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. Structure characterizations show that Pd3Pb/Pt2.37Pb and Pd3Pb/Pt2.07Pb are dominated by hexagonal-structured PtPb intermetallic phase on the surface, while the surface of Pd3Pb/Pt3.50Pb is mainly composed of face-centered cubic (fcc)-structured Pt x Pb phase. As such, hexagonal-structured PtPb phase is much more active than the fcc-structured Pt x Pb one toward MOR. This demonstration is supported by density functional theory calculations, where the hexagonal-structured PtPb phase shows the lowest adsorption energy of CO. The decrease in CO adsorption energy and structural stability also endows Pd3Pb/Pt n Pb electrocatalysts with superior durability relative to commercial Pt/C.
