Fast Coevaporation of 1 μm Thick Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Coevaporation of perovskite films allows for a fine control over the material stoichiometry and thickness but is typically slow, leading to several-hour processes to obtain thick films required for photovoltaic applications. In this work, we demonstrate the coevaporation of perovskite layers using faster deposition rates, obtaining 1 μm thick films in approximately 50 min. We observed distinct structural properties and obtained devices with efficiency exceeding 19%, demonstrating the relevance of this deposition process from a material perspective and also in view of potential industrialization.

Bismuth-Based Perovskite Derivates with Thermal Voltage Exceeding 40 mV/K.

Project description:Heat is an inexhaustible source of energy, and it can be exploited by thermoelectronics to produce electrical power or electrical responses. The search for a low-cost thermoelectric material that could achieve high efficiencies and can also be straightforwardly scalable has turned significant attention to the halide perovskite family. Here, we report the thermal voltage response of bismuth-based perovskite derivates and suggest a path to increase the electrical conductivity by applying chalcogenide doping. The films were produced by drop-casting or spin coating, and sulfur was introduced in the precursor solution using bismuth triethylxanthate. The physical-chemical analysis confirms the substitution. The sulfur introduction caused resistivity reduction by 2 orders of magnitude, and the thermal voltage exceeded 40 mV K-1 near 300 K in doped and undoped bismuth-based perovskite derivates. X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering were employed to confirm the structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were employed to study the composition and morphology of the produced thin films. UV-visible absorbance, photoluminescence, inverse photoemission, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopies have been used to investigate the energy band gap.

Hydrogen-plasma-induced Rapid, Low-Temperature Crystallization of μm-thick a-Si:H Films.

Project description:Being a low-cost, mass-production-compatible route to attain crystalline silicon, post-deposition crystallization of amorphous silicon has received intensive research interest. Here we report a low-temperature (300 °C), rapid (crystallization rate of ~17 nm/min) means of a-Si:H crystallization based on high-density hydrogen plasma. A model integrating the three processes of hydrogen insertion, etching, and diffusion, which jointly determined the hydrogenation depth of the excess hydrogen into the treated micrometer thick a-Si:H, is proposed to elucidate the hydrogenation depth evolution and the crystallization mechanism. The effective temperature deduced from the hydrogen diffusion coefficient is far beyond the substrate temperature of 300 °C, which implies additional driving forces for crystallization, i.e., the chemical annealing/plasma heating and the high plasma sheath electric field. The features of LFICP (low-frequency inductively coupled plasma) and LFICP-grown a-Si:H are also briefly discussed to reveal the underlying mechanism of rapid crystallization at low temperatures.

Sub-10 μm-Thick Ge Thin Film Fabrication from Bulk-Ge Substrates via a Wet Etching Method.

Project description:Low-defect density Ge thin films are crucial for studying the impact of defect density on the performance limits of Ge-based optical devices (optical detectors, LEDs, and lasers). Ge thinning is also important for Ge-based multijunction solar cells. In this work, Ge wet etching using three acidic H2O2 solutions (HF, HCl, and H2SO4) was studied in terms of etching rate, surface morphology, and surface roughness. HCl-H2O2-H2O (1:1:5) was demonstrated to wet-etch 535 μm-thick bulk-Ge substrates to 4.1 μm with a corresponding RMS surface roughness of 10 nm, which was the thinnest Ge film from bulk-Ge via a wet etching method to the best of our knowledge. The good quality of pre-etched bulk-Ge was preserved, and the low threading dislocation density of 6000-7000 cm-2 was maintained after the etching process. This approach provides an inexpensive and convenient way for accurate Ge substrate thinning in applications such as multijunction solar cells and sub-10 μm-thick Ge thin film preparation, which enables future studies of low-defect density Ge-based devices such as photodetectors, LEDs, and lasers.

Noise Reduction Method for Quantifying Nanoparticle Light Scattering in Low Magnification Dark-Field Microscope Far-Field Images.

Project description:Nanoparticles have become a powerful tool for cell imaging and biomolecule, cell and protein interaction studies, but are difficult to rapidly and accurately measure in most assays. Dark-field microscope (DFM) image analysis approaches used to quantify nanoparticles require high-magnification near-field (HN) images that are labor intensive due to a requirement for manual image selection and focal adjustments needed when identifying and capturing new regions of interest. Low-magnification far-field (LF) DFM imagery is technically simpler to perform but cannot be used as an alternate to HN-DFM quantification, since it is highly sensitive to surface artifacts and debris that can easily mask nanoparticle signal. We now describe a new noise reduction approach that markedly reduces LF-DFM image artifacts to allow sensitive and accurate nanoparticle signal quantification from LF-DFM images. We have used this approach to develop a "Dark Scatter Master" (DSM) algorithm for the popular NIH image analysis program ImageJ, which can be readily adapted for use with automated high-throughput assay analyses. This method demonstrated robust performance quantifying nanoparticles in different assay formats, including a novel method that quantified extracellular vesicles in patient blood sample to detect pancreatic cancer cases. Based on these results, we believe our LF-DFM quantification method can markedly decrease the analysis time of most nanoparticle-based assays to impact both basic research and clinical analyses.

Phase-gradient contrast in thick tissue with a scanning microscope.

Project description:It is well known that the principle of reciprocity is valid for light traveling even through scattering or absorptive media. This principle has been used to establish an equivalence between conventional widefield microscopes and scanning microscopes. We make use of this principle to introduce a scanning version of oblique back-illumination microscopy, or sOBM. This technique provides sub-surface phase-gradient and amplitude images from unlabeled tissue, in an epi-detection geometry. That is, it may be applied to arbitrarily thick tissue. sOBM may be implemented as a simple, cost-effective add-on with any scanning microscope, requiring only the availability of an extra input channel in the microscope electronics. We demonstrate here its implementation in combination with two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) microscopy and with coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy, applied to brain or spinal cord tissue imaging. In both cases, sOBM provides information on tissue morphology complementary to TPEF or CARS contrast. This information is obtained simultaneously and is automatically co-registered. Finally, we show that sOBM can be operated at video rate.
