Project description:Carbon from jatropha seed hull (JC) was prepared to study the adsorption of cadmium ions (Cd2+) from aqueous solutions under various experimental conditions. Batch equilibrium methods have been used to study the influences of the initial metal ion concentration (0.5-50 ppm), dosage (0.2-1 g), contact time (0-300 min), pH (2-7), and temperature (26-60 °C) on adsorption behavior. It has been found that the amount of cadmium adsorbed increases with the initial metal ion concentration, temperature, pH, contact time, and amount of adsorbent. A kinetic study proved that the mechanism of Cd2+ adsorption on JC followed a three steps process, confirmed by an intraparticle diffusion model: rapid adsorption of metal ions, a transition phase, and nearly flat plateau section. The experimental results also showed that the Cd2+ adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models were used to describe the experimental data, with the former exhibiting a better correlation coefficient than the latter (R² = 0.999). The monolayer adsorption capacity of JC has been compared with the capacities of the other reported agriculturally-based adsorbents. It has been clearly demonstrated that this agricultural waste generated by the biofuel industry can be considered a potential low-cost adsorbent for the removal of Cd2+ from industrial effluents.

Project description:Cadmium is a global heavy metal pollutant. Marine green algae were used as efficient, low cost and eco-friendly biosorbent for cadmium ions removal from aqueous solutions. Plackett-Burman design was applied to determine the most significant factors for maximum cadmium removal from aqueous solutions using dry Ulva fasciata biomass. The most significant factors affecting cadmium removal process were further optimized by the face centered central composite design. The results indicated that 4 g of dry Ulva fasciata biomass was found to successfully remove 99.96% of cadmium from aqueous solution under the conditions of 200 mg/L of initial cadmium concentration at pH 5, 25 °C for 60 min of contact time with static condition. Dry Ulva fasciata biomass samples before and after cadmium biosorption were analyzed using SEM, EDS and FTIR. Furthermore, the immobilized biomass in sodium alginate-beads removed 99.98% of cadmium from aqueous solution at an initial concentration of 200 mg/L after 4 h which is significantly higher than that for control using sodium alginate beads without incorporation of the algal biomass (98.19%). Dry biomass of Ulva fasciata was proven to be cost-effective and efficient to eliminate heavy metals especially cadmium from aquatic effluents and the process is feasible, reliable and eco-friendly.

Project description:In the title dinuclear ionic complex, [Cd(2)(C(4)H(4)N(2))(H(2)O)(8)][Cd(2)(CH(3)CO(2))(8)(C(4)H(4)N(2))], the cation and anion are disordered equally over a site with symmetry mmm. The Cd(II) ions and the N atoms of the bridging pyrazine ligand lie on the inter-section of two crystallographic mirror planes. The C atoms of the bridging pyrazine ligand lie on one of these mirror planes, and the acetate groups and water mol-ecules lie across the inter-secting mirror planes. Each Cd(II) atom in the cation is five-coordinated by four O atoms from four water mol-ecules and one N atom from the bridging pyrazine ligand, whereas each Cd(II) in the anion is nine-coordinated by four pairs of O atoms from the bidentate acetate ligands and one N atom from the bridging pyrazine ligand. In the crystal structure, each anion is surrounded by eight nearest-neighbour cations and vice versa. The crystal structure is stabilized by ionic inter-actions as well as by C-H⋯O inter-actions.

Project description:In the structure of the title compound, [Cd(H(2)O)(6)](C(6)H(2)N(3)O(7))(2)·H(2)O, the Cd(II) ion is located on an inversion center and is coordinated by six water mol-ecules in an octa-hedral geometry. The picrate anions have no coordination inter-actions with the Cd(II) ion. The three nitro groups are twisted away from the attached benzene ring, making dihedral angles of 17.89 (3), 27.94 (4) and 13.65 (3)°. There are numerous O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds in the crystal structure, involving coordinated and uncoordinated water molecules.

Project description:BackgroundSoil and effluent of lead and zinc industries contain high concentration of cadmium. The present study was conducted to isolate tolerant fungal strains from cadmium -polluted sites in Zanjan province, Iran.MethodsCadmium tolerance and bioremediation capacity of seven isolates including Aspergilus versicolor, Aspergillus fumigatus, Paecilomyces sp.9, Paecilomyces sp.G, Terichoderma sp, Microsporum sp,Cladosporium sp were determined.ResultsMinimum inhibitory concentration values among 1,000-4,000 mg l-(1)proved great ability of isolated strains to survive in cadmium polluted environments. The most tolerant fungi, Aspergilus versicolor, showed tolerance index of 0.8 in 100 mg l-(1) cadmium agar media. Fungal resistance against cadmium is depended directly on strain's biological function. A. versicolor was found to bioaccumulate over7 mg of cadmium per 1 g of mycelium, followed by 5.878, 5.243, and 5.075, 4.557 by Paecilomyces sp, Aspergilus fumigatus, Microsporum sp and Terichoderma sp, respectively.ConclusionIt can be noted that tolerance of the strains appears to be independent from bioaccumulation capacity. Finally, the results indicated that A. versicolor could be a prospective candidate for bioremediation processes.

Project description:The title compound, [Cd(CH(4)N(2)S)(2)(H(2)O)(4)][Cd(CH(4)N(2)S)(3)(H(2)O)(3)](SO(4))(2), contains two mol-ecules of each of the Cd complexes and four sulfate ions in the asymmetric unit: all the Cd atoms exhibit distorted octa-hedral geometries. The Cd-S and Cd-O bond lengths around the Cd atoms in the bis-(thio-urea) cations are in the ranges 2.580 (4)-2.599 (4) and 2.323 (8)-2.421 (9) Å, respectively, and the S atoms are in a cis orientation. In the tris-(thio-urea) cations, the corresponding bond lengths around the Cd atoms are slightly longer and are in the ranges 2.559 (4)-2.706 (3) and 2.303 (7)-2.480 (10) Å, respectively, and the S atoms are in a fac disposition. The crystal structure features numerous N-H⋯O, N-H⋯N, O-H⋯O and O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds. Two O atoms of a sulfate anion were found to be disordered over two orientations in a 0.620 (9):0.380 (9) ratio. The crystal studied was a racemic twin with BASF = 0.17 (5).

Project description:Chitosan has received broad consideration as an adsorbent for all pollutants because of its low cost and great adsorption potential. However, its shortcomings, including sensitivity to pH, poor thermal stability, and poor mechanical strength, limit its use. The functional groups of chitosan can be modified to enhance its performance by the grafting technique and Schiff base modification. The grafting process used acrylonitrile (Ch-g-PAN) as a monomer and potassium persulfate as an initiator. After that, the modification via preparation of the Schiff base reaction using salicylaldehyde (Ch-g-Sch I) and P-anisaldehyde (Ch-g-Sch II) was carried out. The synthesized copolymers were detailed and characterized through several spectroscopic and microscopic techniques including infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. In addition, Ch-g-Sch I and Ch-g-Sch II were applied in the removal of different metal ions such as Cu2+, Cd2+, and Cr3+. The maximum adsorption capacity of Ch-g-Sch I for Cd2+ was 183.7 mg g-1 in 24 h, while in the case of Ch-g-Sch II, the maximum adsorption capacity for Cd2+ was improved to 322.9 mg g-1 for the same time. Moreover, adsorption thermodynamic analysis displays that the all ion adsorption process was not random and the pseudo-second-order model fitted with experimental results. Finally, Ch-g-Sch I and Ch-g-Sch II were applied as designs for industrial wastewater treatment with significant efficiency.

The cyanide ion bridges to a Cd(II) centre via its N atom. The Cd atom (site symmetry 2/m) coordination is a distorted CdN(6) octa-hedron, arising from four cyanide N atoms and two pyridine N atoms. The complete pyridine mol-ecule is generated by m symmetry, with the N atom and one C atom lying on the reflecting plane. Project description:The rapid development in agriculture and industrial sectors has raised some serious global issues like heavy metals pollution of water resources. Cadmium (Cd) is amongst the major water pollutants worldwide. In this study, two novel sorbents were prepared by using post-consumer textile waste (PCTW). The waste denim fabric was recycled with environmentally friendly H2O2 and Ozone through oxidation under alkaline conditions to produce several functional groups at the surface (named as ODF@H202 and ODF@03 respectively) that could trap the heavy metal cations from contaminated water. The functionalized fabric sorbents were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-Ray (EDX) that revealed the presence of carboxylic acid, hydroxyl, and amine functional groups on their surfaces. The sorption isotherm, sorption kinetics and sorption thermodynamics were carried out to unravel the sorption process mechanism. The ODF@H202 sorbent was proved more effective by giving maximum adsorption capacity of (238.09 mg g-1) compared to Ozone treatment (175.44 mg g-1) for Cd2+ and achieved within just 20 min for both sorbents. Pseudo 2nd order and Langmuir models confirmed the chemosorption as dominant mechanism for the monolayer sorption of Cd2+ ions onto ODF@H202 and ODF@03. The sorption thermodynamic revealed the sorption process as endothermic and spontaneous in nature. The results showed that both ODF@H202 and ODF@03 sorbents have an efficient potential for sorbing Cd from contaminated water. Furthermore, both ODF@H202 and ODF@03 sorbents were also tested in a regeneration study to investigate the reuse of these sorbents, and we achieved marvelous results. Both sorbents gave up to 90% of the sorption capacity even after 10 recycles. Conclusively, both sorbents can have their implications for the preparation of filters that can be used for the treatment of wastewater. This study has practical significance by tackling the two environmental problems i.e. heavy metal pollution and denim waste.
