1-Phenyl-1-[(1-phenyl-ethyl)sulfonyl-methyl-sulfon-yl]ethane.

ABSTRACT: There are two mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(17)H(20)O(4)S(2). There are slight differences in the twist of the two rings relative to the S-C-S chain [dihedral angles of 48.41?(18) and 87.58?(16)° in the first mol-ecule and 45.98?(18) and 87.02?(18)° in the second] and the difference in the C-S-C-S torsion angles [176.68?(17) and -77.6?(2)° for the two independent mol-ecules].

The phenyl ring makes a dihedral angle of 75.94 (8)° with the plane of the benzofuran fragment. The crystal structure is stabilized by π-π inter-actions between the furan rings of neighbouring mol-ecules [centroid-centroid distance = 3.620 (4) Å]. In addition, the crystal structure exhibits C-H⋯π inter-actions.

As a result of the electron-withdrawing character of the phenyl-sulfonyl groups, the N-Csp(2) bond lengths are longer than the typical mean value for N atoms with a planar configuration.
