Mild, Efficient, and Metal-Free Radical 1,2-Dithiocyanation of Alkynes and Alkenes at Room Temperature.

Project description:A transition metal-free process has been reported for 1,2-dithiocyanation of alkynes in the presence of sodium persulfate and potassium thiocyanate reagent combination in a short reaction time under ambient air. Styrene derivatives are equally applicable under the same reaction conditions. Monothiocyanated vinyl derivatives were also synthesized from 2-ethynylpyridine and dimethyl acetylene dicarboxylate. The reaction proceeds by the radical/polar pathway as evidenced from our experiments and literature. After removal of the solvent from the reaction mixture by evaporation, the crude product was purified without conventional workup.

Fast, efficient, narrowband room-temperature phosphorescence from metal-free 1,2-diketones: rational design and the mechanism.

Project description:We report metal-free organic 1,2-diketones that exhibit fast and highly efficient room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with high colour purity under various conditions, including solutions. RTP quantum yields reached 38.2% in solution under Ar, 54% in a polymer matrix in air, and 50% in crystalline solids in air. Moreover, the narrowband RTP consistently dominated the steady-state emission, regardless of the molecular environment. Detailed mechanistic studies using ultrafast spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray structure analysis, and theoretical calculations revealed picosecond intersystem crossing (ISC) followed by RTP from a planar conformation. Notably, the phosphorescence rate constant k p was unambiguously established as ∼5000 s-1, which is comparable to that of platinum porphyrins (representative heavy-metal phosphor). This inherently large k p enabled the high-efficiency RTP across diverse molecular environments, thus complementing the streamlined persistent RTP approach. The mechanism behind the photofunction has been elucidated as follows: (1) the large k p is due to efficient intensity borrowing of the T1 state from the bright S3 state, (2) the rapid ISC occurs from the S1 to the T3 state because these states are nearly isoenergetic and have a considerable spin-orbit coupling, and (3) the narrowband emission results from the minimal geometry change between the T1 and S0 states. Such mechanistic understanding based on molecular orbitals, as well as the structure-RTP property relationship study, highlighted design principles embodied by the diketone planar conformer. The fast RTP strategy enables development of organic phosphors with emissions independent of environmental conditions, thereby offering alternatives to precious-metal based phosphors.

Efficient metal free organic radical scintillators.

Project description:The development of high-performance metal-free organic X-ray scintillators (OXSTs), characterized by a synergistic combination of robust X-ray absorption, efficient exciton utilization, and short luminescence lifetimes, poses a considerable challenge. Here we present an effective strategy for achieving augmented X-ray scintillation through the utilization of halogenated open-shell organic radical scintillators. Our experimental results demonstrate that the synthesized scintillators exhibit strong X-ray absorption derived from halogen atoms, display efficacious X-ray stability, and theoretically achieve 100% exciton utilization efficiency with a short lifetime (∼18 ns) due to spin-allowed doublet transitions. The superior X-ray scintillation performance exhibited by these organic radicals is not only exploitable in X-ray radiography for contrast imaging of various objects but also applicable in a medical high-resolution micro-computer-tomography system for the clear visualization of fibrous veins within a bamboo stick. Our study substantiates the promise of organic radicals as prospective candidates for OXSTs, offering valuable insights and a roadmap for the development of advanced organic radical scintillators geared towards achieving high-quality X-ray radiography.

Redox-neutral, metal-free tryptophan labeling of polypeptides in hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP).

Project description:Despite the unmet needs for chemical tools to study biological roles of tryptophan in living systems, there has been a lack of chemical modification methods for tryptophan residues that can be used in cellular environments. Driven by a preliminary computational study of our previous research, this work experimentally examined our hypotheses to translate the metal-catalyzed tryptophan modification method in hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) into a metal-free process. While one of the hypotheses merely confirmed the superiority of the thiophene-ethanol reagent developed in the previous report, the second hypothesis resulted in the identification of a trifluoroborate salt and an acidic ionic liquid as alternatives for the catalysis. Labeling of lysates of a human cell line was achieved with the acidic ionic liquid catalyst, where negative impacts of the tryptophan labeling and HFIP medium on the cellular samples were apparently insignificant. Because the labeling process does not require any redox mediators and is a formal redox-neutral reaction, the metal-free approach would be of use for tryptophan biology research potentially related to their various redox roles.

Efficient and "Green" Synthetic Route to Imidazo[1,2-<i>a</i>]pyridine by Cu(II)-Ascorbate-Catalyzed A<sup>3</sup>-Coupling in Aqueous Micellar Media.

Project description:An efficient and environmentally sustainable method for the synthesis of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives by domino A3-coupling reaction catalyzed by Cu(II)-ascorbate was developed in aqueous micellar media in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The catalyst, a dynamic combination of Cu(II)/Cu(I), was generated in situ in the reaction mixture by mixing CuSO4 with sodium ascorbate and aided a facile 5-exo-dig cycloisomerization of alkynes with the condensation products of 2-aminopyridines and aldehydes to afford a variety of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines in good overall yields. A simple experimental setup, water as the "green" medium, and inexpensive catalyst and auxiliary are some of the merits of this protocol.

Project description:The title binuclear compound, [W(2)Cl(6)(NO)(2)(C(10)H(22)P(2))(3)], contains two W atoms which are bridged by a bis-(diethyl-phosphino)-ethane (depe) ligand. The seven-coord-inated tungsten(II) centres display distorted penta-gonal-bipyramidal geometries with trans nitrosyl and chloride ligands. The title mol-ecule lies on a crystallographic inversion centre. The ethane group of the non-bridging depe ligand is positionally disordered, with site-occupancy factors of 0.63 and 0.37. In the crystal structure, the binuclear mol-ecules are linked by weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O and C-H⋯Cl inter-actions. In addition, weak intra-molecular C-H⋯Cl inter-actions are also present.

Bismuth-Based Free-Standing Electrodes for Ambient-Condition Ammonia Production in Neutral Media.

Project description:Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction is a carbon-free and energy-saving strategy for efficient synthesis of ammonia under ambient conditions. Here, we report the synthesis of nanosized Bi2O3 particles grown on functionalized exfoliated graphene (Bi2O3/FEG) via a facile electrochemical deposition method. The obtained free-standing Bi2O3/FEG achieves a high Faradaic efficiency of 11.2% and a large NH3 yield of 4.21 ± 0.14 [Formula: see text] h-1 cm-2 at - 0.5 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode in 0.1 M Na2SO4, better than that in the strong acidic and basic media. Benefiting from its strong interaction of Bi 6p band with the N 2p orbitals, binder-free characteristic, and facile electron transfer, Bi2O3/FEG achieves superior catalytic performance and excellent long-term stability as compared with most of the previous reported catalysts. This study is significant to design low-cost, high-efficient Bi-based electrocatalysts for electrochemical ammonia synthesis.
