Project description:In this paper, the post-cracking tensile behavior of Ultra-High Performance Cementitious Composites (UHPCC) was studied and an improved analytical model to predict the behavior depending on the fiber orientation distribution was proposed. Two different casting methods were adopted to estimate the influence of the casting method on the tensile behavior. The direct tensile test results showed that the post-cracking tensile behavior was considerably dependent on the casting method. The influence of the casting method was quantified by image analysis of the fiber distribution. The fiber orientation distribution obtained by image analysis may sometimes include considerable error according to the image resolution, which may cause inaccuracy when predicting the post-cracking tensile behavior based on the fiber orientation distribution. To overcome this dependency, the tensile bridging behavior by the fibers in UHPCC was simulated considering the obtained fiber orientation distribution as well as the number of fibers detected. The post-cracking behavior was then simulated by combining the bridging behavior and tension softening behavior of the matrix. The approach adopted in this study to simulate the post-cracking behavior of UHPCC showed good agreement with the experimental results.

Project description:It is thought that extensional structures (extensional cracks and normal faults) generated during the post-seismic period create fluid pathways that enhance the drainage of the subducting plate interface, thus reducing the pore pressure and increasing fault strength. However, it remains to be elucidated how much pore fluid pressure decreases by the extension crack formation. Here we examined (i) the pore fluid pressure decrease, and (ii) the degree fault strength recovery by the extension crack formation during the post-seismic period by analyzing extension quartz veins exposed around the Nobeoka Thrust, southwestern Japan. The Nobeoka Trust is an on-land analog of the modern splay fault at shallow depths (~ 8 km) in the Nankai Trough. The poro-elastic model of extensional quartz vein formation indicates that the formation of extensional cracks only releases up to ~ 7-8% of the total pore fluid pressure at ~ 8 km depth. The pore pressure around the Nobeoka Thrust was close to lithostatic pressure during the entire seismic cycle. The estimated effective frictional coefficient along the Nobeoka Thrust after this small fluid-loss by the extensional crack formation does not exceed 0.15. Hence, the pore fluid pressure reduction due to the post-seismic extensional cracks contributes little to increase the fault strength of the megasplay fault.

Project description:Extensive use of titanium alloys is partly hindered by a lack of ductility, strain hardening, and fracture toughness. Recently, several β-metastable titanium alloys were designed to simultaneously activate both transformation-induced plasticity and twinning-induced plasticity effects, resulting in significant improvements to their strain hardening capacity and resistance to plastic localization. Here, we report an ultra-large fracture resistance in a Ti-12Mo alloy (wt.%), that results from a high resistance to damage nucleation, with an unexpected fracture phenomenology under quasi-static loading. Necking develops at a large uniform true strain of 0.3 while fracture initiates at a true fracture strain of 1.0 by intense through-thickness shear within a thin localized shear band. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that dynamic recrystallization occurs in this band, while local partial melting is observed on the fracture surface. Shear band temperatures of 1250-2450 °C are estimated by the fusible coating method. The reported high ductility combined to the unconventional fracture process opens alternative avenues toward Ti alloys toughening.

Project description:Crystal deformation mechanisms and mechanical behaviors in semiconductor nanowires (NWs), in particular ZnSe NWs, exhibit a strong orientation dependence. However, very little is known about tensile deformation mechanisms for different crystal orientations. Here, the dependence of crystal orientations on mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of zinc-blende ZnSe NWs are explored using molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the fracture strength of [111]-oriented ZnSe NWs shows a higher value than that of [110] and [100]-oriented ZnSe NWs. Square shape ZnSe NWs show greater value in terms of fracture strength and elastic modulus compared to a hexagonal shape at all considered diameters. With increasing temperature, the fracture stress and elastic modulus exhibit a sharp decrease. It is observed that the {111} planes are the deformation planes at lower temperatures for the [100] orientation; conversely, when the temperature is increased, the {100} plane is activated and contributes as the second principal cleavage plane. Most importantly, the [110]-directed ZnSe NWs show the highest strain rate sensitivity compared to the other orientations due to the formation of many different cleavage planes with increasing strain rates. The calculated radial distribution function and potential energy per atom further validates the obtained results. This study is very important for the future development of efficient and reliable ZnSe NWs-based nanodevices and nanomechanical systems.

Project description:Nanomaterials have been increasingly employed for improving the mechanical properties and durability of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) with high volume supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). Recently, graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets have appeared as one of the most promising nanomaterials for enhancing the properties of cementitious composites. To date, a majority of studies have concentrated on cement pastes and mortars with fewer investigations on normal concrete, ultra-high strength concrete, and ultra-high-performance cement-based composites with a high volume of cement content. The studies of UHPC with high volume SCMs have not yet been widely investigated. This paper presents an experimental investigation into the mini slump flow and physical properties of such a UHPC containing GO nanosheets at additions from 0.00 to 0.05% by weight of cement and a water-cement ratio of 0.16. The study demonstrates that the mini slump flow gradually decreases with increasing GO nanosheet content. The results also confirm that the optimal content of GO nanosheets under standard curing and under steam curing is 0.02% and 0.04%, respectively, and the corresponding compressive and flexural strengths are significantly improved, establishing a fundamental step toward developing a cost-effective and environmentally friendly UHPC for more sustainable infrastructure.

Project description:Myocardial infarction was experimentally induced in rat hearts and harvested immediately, 7, 14 and 28 days after the infarction induction. Anterior wall infarct samples underwent biaxial tensile and uniaxial compressive testing. Orientation of collagen fibres was analysed following mechanical testing. In this paper, we present the tensile and compressive stress-strain raw data, the calculated tensile and compressive moduli and the measured angles of collagen orientation. The presented data is associated with the research article titled "Characterisation of the mechanical properties of infarcted myocardium in the rat under biaxial tension and uniaxial compression" (Sirry et al., 2016) [1].

Project description:In order to identify common gene expression across other gliopathic bang senstiive genes (i.e. genes that when knocked down or over expressed by repo-GAL4 cause seizures) we crossed six UAS-RNAi or UAS-over-expression lines for known bang senstive genes to repo-GAL4. We pooled total RNA from brains of these animals in equal amounts and ran microarray analysis to search for transcripts that are common among these six seizure associated genes.

Project description:Hot tensile test data of Gas Tungsten Arc Welded (GTAW) autogenous joints of Super 304HCu tubes tested at their operating temperature are presented along with the microstructure of the weld joint. The GTAW joints exhibited lower tensile strength than the parent metal and the failure occurred in the weld metal region for all test temperatures. Constant load Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) test data of the GTAW weld joints tested in boiling MgCl2 environment at different applied stress level are presented. SCC curves obtained from the test were analyzed to derive SCC parameters such as rate of steady state elongation, the time required for set-in of tertiary region, and time to complete fracture. The fracture surfaces of SCC samples were examined using Scanning Electron Microscope to reveal the mode of fracture. Super 304HCu stainless steel being used as construction material for super heaters and reheaters of advanced ultra super critical boilers, this data will be an addition to the design data available for material selection in design of power plants.

Project description:Aged rice (AR) was mildly heated in aqueous dispersions containing different amounts of xanthan gum (Xan) at 60 °C for 1 h, and then dried in a humidity chamber (50 °C, 80% RH) for 12 h. The AR kernels treated without Xan showed a coarse surface with many pores after cooking, whereas the same rice treated with Xan showed a smooth and uniform surface. Prior to the treatment, the cooked AR was harder and less sticky than the cooked fresh rice (FR). The hydrothermal treatment softened the cooked AR although did not change its adhesiveness. The same treatment in the presence of Xan could increase the adhesiveness of AR, making the textural characteristics of AR similar to those of FR. Sensory evaluation revealed that the mild heat treatment in the presence of Xan restored the eating quality and acceptability of cooked AR which had been lost by aging.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10068-023-01306-0.

Project description:Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior of Ni-free duplex stainless steels containing N and C (Febalance-19Cr-8Mn-0.25C-(0.03, 0.21)N, in wt %) was investigated by using a slow strain rate test (SSRT) in air and aqueous NaCl solution with different tensile directions, including parallel (longitudinal) and perpendicular (transverse) to the rolling direction. It was found that alloying N was effective in increasing the resistance to SCC, while it was higher along the longitudinal direction than the transverse direction. The SCC susceptibility of the two alloys was assessed based on the electrochemical resistance to pitting corrosion, the corrosion morphology, and the fractographic analysis.
