NORCCAP: Norwegian Colorectal Cancer Prevention Trial

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to see if screening with flexible sigmoidoscopy (a flexible viewing tube) may reduce large bowel cancer and cancer deaths. The researchers also want to see if the addition of screening for occult blood in stools may contribute further to this aim. Additionally, the researchers also want to see to which extent (and in which direction) the study may influence overall endoscopic activity in the general population in the screening area and in areas where controlled screening is not established.

Multicentre randomised trial of ‘once only’ flexible sigmoidoscopy screening for prevention of bowel cancer morbidity and mortality

Project description:Background and study aims Bowel cancer is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK. Bowel cancers develop slowly from common bowel growths or polyps, so removing them can help prevent cancer. Screening with flexible sigmoidoscopy (also called ‘bowel scope’ or Flexi-scope) involves insertion of a thin flexible tube with a light and camera on the end into the bowel to examine the inner surface. Small bowel polyps can be removed during screening. The aim of the UK Flexible Sigmoidoscopy Screening Trial (UKFSST) was to determine whether having just one flexible sigmoidoscopy screen at around 60 years of age could prevent bowel cancer from developing and reduce the number of deaths from bowel cancer. The trial also aimed to determine how long any benefit lasts, and what is the best age to do the screening examination. Who can participate? Men and women who were aged 55–64 years and registered at a participating GP practice between November 1994 and March 1999. What does the study involve? The UKFSST was a randomised controlled trial. People who participated in the trial were randomly assigned to receive either flexible sigmoidoscopy screening or no screening (which was the usual care offered at the time of the trial).

Project description:We developed a Transcriptomic Analysis Pipeline (TAP) as a flexible workflow for comprehensive transcriptome analysis from any species with a reference genome. We tested TAP in a case study to compare polyA+ and rRNA-depletion RNA-seq library protocols using Drosophila melanogaster following different thermal stress temperatures. TAP provides a flexible and complete pipeline to enable researchers to extract more biologically relevant interpretations by integrated and interactive transcriptome analysis.

Peppermint oil for flexible sigmoidoscopy pre-medication

Project description:Interventions: All attenders at a flexible sigmoidoscopy based colorectal cancer screening group are invited to participate in this substudy. Participants are randomly allocated to receive a peppermint oil capsule taken orally at least 30 minutes prior to undergoing sigmoidoscopy. Additionally, the same participants are randomly allocated to recieve one (standard care) or two phosphate enemas per rectum as bowel preparation also at least 30 minutes prior toprior to sigmoidoscopy. Both interventions are single administrations only on the day of sigmoidoscopy. Primary outcome(s): Adenoma detection rate at sigmoidoscopy.
