ABSTRACT: RATIONALE: Chemoprevention is the use of certain drugs to keep cancer from forming, growing, or coming back. The use of nitric oxide-releasing acetylsalicyclic acid may prevent colorectal cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase I trial is studying the side effects and best dose of nitric oxide-releasing acetylsalicyclic acid in preventing colorectal cancer in patients at high risk of colorectal cancer.

Patients with ulcerative colitis are at increased risk for colorectal cancer. Chemoprevention is the use of drugs, such as berberine chloride, to keep a disease/condition from forming or coming back. The use of berberine chloride may keep colorectal cancer from forming in patients with ulcerative colitis.

Chemoprevention is the use of certain drugs or substances to keep cancer from forming, growing, or coming back. The use of atorvastatin calcium, oligofructose-enriched inulin, or sulindac may stop cancer from forming in patients at increased risk of colorectal neoplasia. It is not yet known whether atorvastatin calcium, oligofructose-enriched inulin, or sulindac are more effective than a placebo in preventing cancer in patients at increased risk of developing colorectal neoplasia.
