SS-GCC1- Screening Study of Genetic Changes in Colorectal Cancer

ABSTRACT: the principal research objective is to form a database of tissue samples from patients with colorectal (bowel) cancer. The tissue samples that will be used for this research will have already been taken for diagnostic or therapeutic reasons. We will also be asking for consent for a research blood sample. The database will be used to improve our understanding of the molecular genetics and gene expression patterns in colorectal cancer.

Project description:The Chinese chestnut (Castanea mollissima) stands out as a plant with significant ecological and economic value, excellent nutritional quality and natural resistance to pests and diseases. Recent strides in high-throughput techniques have enabled the continuous accumulation of genomic data on chestnuts, presenting a promising future for genetic research and advancing traits in this species. To facilitate the accessibility and utility of this data, we have curated and validated a collection of genomic datasets for eight Castanea species, 213 RNA-Seq samples, and 348 resequencing samples. These datasets are publicly available on figshare, providing a robust resource for researchers studying Castanea genetics, functional genomics, and evolutionary biology. Additionally, the Castanea Genome Database (CGD, http://castaneadb.net) serves as a complementary platform, offering advanced data mining and analysis tools, including BLAST, Batch Query, GO/KEGG Enrichment Analysis, and Synteny Viewer, to enhance the usability of the curated datasets.

Comparative study of gene expression during early vertebrate development between Xenopus laevis and Sturgeon

Project description:Sturgeon and Xenopus is estimated to be separate by about 400 My of evolution. We have collected data on temporal expression profile in Sturgeon in order to compare the level and timing of expression for homologous pairs of genes, commonly referred to as hetero-metry and hetero-chrony. Following up our previously published research on similar comparison between two species of Xenopus separated by estimated 50 My, we are asking whether patterns of expression and signaling cascades of two key developmental periods - gastrulation and neurulation are implemented via conserved molecular basis. Uncovering and describing deviation for the conserved expression program as well as the composition of maternal deposit will provide new insights into vertebrate development both the normal course and developmental abnormalities.

Gene Expression in Acute Appendicitis

Project description:Gene expression was evaluated in 9 appendix samples removed from patients who went to the operating room with the diagnosis of acute appendicitis and 4 samples removed for non-inflammatory reasons. A circumferential piece of tissue was obtained at the distal aspect of each specimen. The tissue was flash frozen at -80 degrees for later processing. Frozen specimens were homogenized into TriReagent and RNA was isolated according to the manufacturer's instruction. RNA was processed and hybridized to Affymetrix microarray.
