Effect of Cancer Nurse Navigators on Patient Outcomes

ABSTRACT: There is widespread anecdotal evidence that Cancer Nurse Navigators (CNNs) are highly valued by cancer patients, but no studies have evaluated the effects of CNNs on important patient-reported outcomes or indicators of quality of care. This study has two aims: 1. To assess the feasibility of studying the impact of Aurora CNN Program. 2. To pilot test the effects of CNN services on patient-reported outcomes and indicators of quality of care.

Project description:Despite the potential of volatolomics for non invasive monitoring, the detection of VAP in children remains a significant clinical challenge. Herein, we present a GC MS method for the analysis of longitudinally collected breath samples from hospitalized children in the ICU. Results from part of the 3 year CASSANDRA project. We applied a rigorous normalization strategy to ensure sample comparability across multiple time points. The final aim of the study is to determine whether specific VOC fingerprints can serve as early indicators of VAP, thereby improving diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes in the pediatric intensive care unit.

Deciphering hypoxia related glioblastoma-associated macrophages and predicting prognostic markers by single-cell, spatially-resolved transcriptomics and experimental analysis

Project description:Glioblastomas (GBM), the most common and lethal type of primary brain tumor in adult, currently lack effective treatment and prognostic indicators. Hypoxia，a pathology promoting tumor progression in most solid tumors, has been reported to exhibit a negative correlation with GBM prognosis. Hypoxia related tumor-associated macrophages (hTAMs), the major cellular component of hypoxic regions, have not being systematically studied. We characterized the transcriptomic identity of hTAMs at the single-cell level, simultaneously discovering signatures indicative of poor outcomes. Immunofluorescent staining and spatially resolved transcriptomics revealed pronounced disparities regarding the morphology and distribution of TAMs between hypoxic and non-hypoxic regions of GBMs. We identified ARL4C and HSPA5 as prognostic indicators, exhibiting spatial patterns congruent with hypoxic regions and predicting worse outcomes, verified by qPCR and cell culture. Intercellular communication analysis using single-cell-omics revealed that hypoxia related GBM tumor cells (hGBM cells) exploit the TIMP1/LRP1 ligand-receptor axis to modulate hTAMs, resulting in a worse prognosis. Our study has offered clinically prognostic indicators, along with potentially therapeutic targets for GBMs.

Patient-Reported Outcomes in Long-Term Survivors of Colon and Rectal Cancers

Project description:RATIONALE: Learning about quality of life, symptoms, and health behaviors in colorectal cancer survivors may help to determine the long-term effects of colon and rectal cancer treatments and may help to improve the quality of life for future cancer survivors. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is looking at patient-reported outcomes in long-term survivors of colon and rectal cancers.
