Project description:Interventions: The intervention is based on cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and consists of blended therapy, a combination of face-to-face CBT with a self-management interactive website. The intervention lasts four months and compromises of five individual face-to-face sessions, supplemented by three telephone contacts. Patients will have daily access to the self-management website. The CBT protocol is directed at changing cognitions and behavior related to distress. Treatment will be individually-tailored based on the presenting problems identified during clinical assessment and and the data gathered during baseline assessment. The intervention consists of one generic module and three optional modules. Three different types of distress will be addressed in the modules: 1) distress caused by physical consequences (e.g. post-cancer fatigue, gastrointestinal problems, urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction), 2) anxiety and fear of recurrence, 3) depressive mood.
Primary outcome(s): Psychological distress as measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18)

Abstract:
The natural sources of the vitamins, which come from a balanced diet (as recommended by the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research) contribute to protecting the body from advancing progressive of cancer stages. Thus, in this study, we analyze the effect of the intervention of vitamins on delaying the growth of cancer cells based on the dynamics of a normal cell cycle when the tumor cells appear in a tissue as a resulting for progressing abnormal cells due to the weak response of the immune system. We developed a mathematical model, called tumor-normal-vitamins model (TNVM), which is governed by a system of ordinary differential equations and refers to two main populations normal cells and tumor cells. This model considers the intervention of vitamins as a moderating factor within thirty days. The models are discussed analytically and numerically by utilizing the Runge-Kutta method to simulate them. The results of the analysis and simulation of free model illustrate that the model will be stable if the tumor cells succeed in eliminating normal cells in the tissue. Whereas, the analysis and simulation of the TNVM showed a case of coexistence between normal cells and tumor cells occur if an individual consumes a regular rate of vitamins that have been simulated to be 87% per day from a natural food source. Even though the response of the immune system is weak, the daily consumption of enough vitamins can play an essential role in delaying the development of an early stage of cancer. This study contributes to the increasing awareness regarding a healthy diet to reduce the risk of some deadly diseases, especially cancer.

Project description:No consensus treatment regime exists beyond surgery for malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (MPNST), and the purpose of the present study was to find new approaches to stratify patients with good and poor prognosis and to better guide therapeutic intervention for this aggressive soft tissue cancer. Genome-wide RNA expression was analysed for 30 MPNSTs and eight neurofibromas from Scandinavian patients, and the overall gene expression in these two groups were compared in order to identify prognostic markers.

Project description:Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) predisposes patients to leukemia and lymphoma. WAS is caused by mutations in the protein WASP which impair its interaction with the WIPF1 protein. Here, we aim to identify a module of WIPF1-coexpressed genes and to assess its use as a prognostic signature for colorectal cancer, glioma, and breast cancer patients. Two public colorectal cancer microarray data sets were used for discovery and validation of the WIPF1 co-expression module. Based on expression of the WIPF1 signature, we classified more than 400 additional tumors with microarray data from our own experiments or from publicly available data sets according to their WIPF1 signature expression. This allowed us to separate patient populations for colorectal cancers, breast cancers, and gliomas for which clinical characteristics like survival times and times to relapse were analyzed. Groups of colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and glioma patients with low expression of the WIPF1 co-expression module generally had a favorable prognosis. In addition, the majority of WIPF1 signature genes are individually correlated with disease outcome in different studies. Literature gene network analysis revealed that among WIPF1 co-expressed genes known direct transcriptional targets of c-myc, ESR1 and p53 are enriched. The mean expression profile of WIPF1 signature genes is correlated with the profile of a proliferation signature. The WIPF1 signature is the first microarray-based prognostic expression signature primarily developed for colorectal cancer that is instrumental in other tumor types: low expression of the WIPF1 module is associated with better prognosis. We used microarrays for the validation of a WIPF1 co-expression module which was developed on two publically available datasets. Project description:This randomized clinical trial studies website access or genetic counseling with or without patient navigators on adherence to colorectal cancer screening recommendations in patients with newly diagnosed colorectal cancer and their first degree relatives. Websites for colorectal cancer prevention and genetic counseling may be effective methods to help people learn about cancer screening. Patient navigators may improve adherence to colorectal cancer screening recommendations. It is not yet known whether website access or genetic counseling is more effective with or without patient navigators.

Project description:The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the interactive nurse support program developed as a mobile application on patient outcomes (symptom management, quality of life, perception of social support and anxiety) in colorectal cancer patients receiving chemotherapy during the COVID-19 process; It was planned in a randomized controlled, single-blind design. In the study, a mobile application will be designed for colorectal cancer patients with the content created in line with the literature. In the application, the "about COVID-19" module, which includes information for colorectal cancer patients during the COVID-19 process, the "learning module" in which the symptoms and suggestions for colorectal cancer patients receiving chemotherapy are included, the "discussion" module where patients can share their knowledge and experiences with each other, The "ask the expert" module, where nurses and physicians can ask questions, will be comprised of the "lived stories" module and the communication sections, which include interview videos made with individuals who are in remission only after completing the treatment related to the disease. A pretest consisting of Personal Information Form, Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale EORTC QLQ-C30 and CR29 Quality of Life Scale, ECOG Performance Scale and Beck Anxiety Scale will be administered to all patients included in the study. The mobile application will be installed on the phones of the patients in the experimental group and they will be used for 12 weeks. Patients in the control group will receive standard care during this process and no intervention will be made. In the sixth and twelve weeks, all participants will be given a posttest. The change in symptom management, quality of life, perceived social support and anxiety levels of the experimental group after mobile application use will be evaluated.
