Community Engaged Colon Cancer Screening Patient Navigator Program

ABSTRACT: The goal of the project is to increase colorectal cancer screening within the priority population of female and male adults age 50 to 85 in Northern Nevada. A successful community-based cancer patient navigator program will be modified in partnership with the community into a multi-level screening intervention.

A Population of Navigator Neurons is Essential for Olfactory Map Formation during Critical Period

Project description:In the developing brain, heightened plasticity during the critical period enables the proper formation of neural circuits. Here we identify the “navigator” neurons, a group of perinatally born olfactory sensory neurons, as playing an essential role in establishing the olfactory map during the critical period. The navigator axons project circuitously in the olfactory bulb and traverse multiple glomeruli before terminating in perspective glomeruli. These neurons undergo a phase of exuberant axon growth and exhibit a shortened lifespan. Single cell transcriptome analyses reveal distinct molecular signatures for the navigators. Extending their lifespan prolongs the period of exuberant growth and perturbs axon convergence. Conversely, genetic ablation experiment indicates that, despite postnatal neurogenesis, only the navigators are endowed with the ability to establish a convergent map. The presence and the proper removal of the navigator neurons are both required to establish tight axon convergence into the glomeruli.

The transition probability now depends on the cohort (Male or Female) and can be expressed as a function of a Boolean covariate Male. Kukui Ahi Navigator Cancer Screening and Treatment Demonstration Project

Project description:This Cancer Prevention and Treatment Demonstration Project funded by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services awarded six sites across the United States to develop Patient Navigator Programs to eliminate disparities in the rate of preventative cancer screening and timely diagnosis and treatment of cancer for racial and ethnic minorities. This site of Molokai General Hospital are focused on Pacific Islanders and Asian Americans. This program called Kukui Ahi propose to increase screening and early detection for four targeted cancers-breast, cervical, colorectal, and prostate- with lung cancer additionally being included in treatment protocols to improve outcomes and satisfaction by employing a culturally appropriate navigation protocol to facilitate utilization of healthcare services and decrease health barriers. The specific aims of the project is to: 1. Determine if a Navigator Program can reduce the proportion of the targeted cancers diagnosed at a late stage, 2. Determine if the Navigator Program can improve the continuity of health care for cancer patients, 3. Determine if the Navigator Program can improve quality of life and subjective well being of navigated cancer patients, 4. Determine if the Navigator Program is a cost-effective way to reduce cancer care disparities for screenable cancers.

A Community Population Screening Cohort Study Based on Polygene Methylation Detection for Colorectal Cancer in Yangzhou

Project description:This is a cross-sectional cohort study based on community population jointly developed by Northern Jiangsu People’s Hospital and Shanghai Kunyuan Biological Technology Co., LTD. This study will verify the real world results of polygene methylation detection of colorectal cancer in a large prospective cohort of community population, which is expected to enroll 80,000 permanent residents in Yangzhou city. The preliminary design period of the study is 5 years. In this study, questionnaire survey and polygene methylation test of colorectal cancer were used as the primary screening method, and colonoscopy was used as the further validation examination method to screen colorectal cancer and precancerous lesions. The diagnosis and outcome of all lesions were based on colonoscopy and pathological examination. The evaluation indexes include sensitivity, specificity, detection rate of precancerous lesions and adenoma.

Project description:Model with functions depending on Age, Male, BP (Blood Pressure). There are 3 disease states: Healthy, Sick, and Dead, where the Dead state is terminal. The yearly transition probabilities are: Healthy to Dead: Age/1000; Healthy to Sick: According to function F1 depending on Age and Male and BP; Sick to Healthy: 0.1; Sick to Dead: according to function F2 depending on Age and Male. Pre-Transition Rules: Age increased by 1 and BP by Age/10 each simulation cycle. Post-Transition Rules: Treatment = BP>140 , becomes 1 when BP crosses 140 threshold; BP =BP-Treatment*10 , meaning a drop of 10 once treatment is applied; CostThisYear = Age + \Treatment*10 , cost depends on age and if treatment was taken; Cost= Cost + CostThisYear , it accumulates cost over time. Initial conditions: Healthy = (50 Male, 50 Female with Age =1,2,...,50 for each individual), BP =120, Sick = (0,0) and Dead = (0,0).
