Methods for Increasing Genetic Testing Uptake in Michigan

ABSTRACT: The primary purpose of this study is to compare three interventions, two experimental and one standard of care (usual care), to see if the experimental interventions will increase the likelihood of a participant obtaining guideline-concordant genetic testing. Eligible participants will be randomized (assigned) to one of the following interventions: 1) Virtual genetics navigator, a mobile-optimized website, designed by the investigators, that delivers tailored messages and content; 2) two motivational interviewing (MI) telephone calls delivered by trained genetics health coaches; or 3) usual care.

Tailoring information to older colorectal cancer patients: Effects of using a web-based patient-directed tool

Project description:Interventions: Patients will be assigned to an experimental condition that receives the Patient Navigator in addition to usual care or to a control condition that receives usual care. Randomization takes place at hospital level, i.e. three hospitals will implement the Patient Navigator and three hospitals will serve as control condition hospitals and will implement the Patient Navigator after the study has finished. The Patient Navigator is a website for older colorectal cancer patients that is systematically developed in the first part of the OCA-2 study. The Patient Navigator offers tailored information about diagnostic tests, treatments and follow-up facilities (i.e., only content that is relevant for the specific patient is showed). Moreover, the Patient Navigator offers the possibility to upload audiotaped consultations and contains tools to help patients preparing for consultations (so called Question Prompt Lists; one with general questions that people can ask about every treatment, and 13 about specific tests or treatments). Genome-wide profiling of gene expression under electro-acupuncture treatment on MI heart in rats

Project description:Purpose: Acupuncture exerts cardioprotective effects on several types of cardiac injuries, especially myocardial ischemia (MI). In order to elucidate the potential mechanisms, RNA-seq by next generation sequencing was used to identify the rat genome-wide alterations after MI and EA treatment in this study Methods: Adult male Sprague Dawley rats (250-300g) were divided into three groups: Control, MI and electro-acupuncture (EA) groups, myocardium mRNA profiles of rats in each group were generated by deep sequencing,using Illumina Hiseq 2000. The sequence reads that passed quality filters were analyzed at the transcript isoform level with two methods: BurrowsâWheeler Aligner (BWA) followed by ANOVA (ANOVA) and TopHat followed by Cufflinks. Results: Using an optimized data analysis workflow, we mapped about 25 million sequence reads per sample to the mouse genome (UCSC RN4) and identified 121,233, 178,242, 161,880 transcripts in the Control, MI and EA rats with TopHat and Cufflinks workflow respectively. Approximately 32% and 22% of the transcripts showed differential expression between the Control and MI, MI and EA respectively with a fold change â¥2.0. Conclusions: Our results for the first time generated genome-wide gene expression profiles both in the rat MI model and in acupuncture treatment by high throughput sequencing. The optimized data analysis workflows reported here should provide a framework for acupuncture investigations of expression profiles. Myocardium mRNA profiles of Control, MI and EA rats were generated by Hiseq 2000, Control and MI+EA group there were three samples, MI group there were two samples.

#CuttingCRC: Barbershop-Based Trial & Colorectal Cancer

Project description:The goal of this behavior change focused, culture-specific, pilot, peer intervention is to target masculinity barriers to medical care (MBMC) considering a range of psychosocial factors associated with uptake of CRC screening (fecal immunochemical test (FIT)) among African-American men. Barbershops will serve as intervention sites and barbers will be trained in the technique of Motivational Interviewing (MI) which will guide the barbers to encourage their clients with culturally relevant messaging to take a FIT kit home and then send to the lab for processing (uptake). The main questions it aims to answer are the feasibility of recruitment, sample size estimation, preliminary efficacy, and the acceptability of barbers to deliver culture-specific messages that aim to overcome masculinity barriers to medical care. Researchers will compare the culture-specific intervention with a control arm, where barbers provide their client an evidenced-based American Cancer Society brochure on colorectal cancer screening to understand if barbers peers using MI and culturally relevant messaging better overcome masculinity barriers to medical care than the barber using the brochure alone.
