Project description:Sexual reproduction and recombination are essential for the survival of most eukaryotic populations. Until recently, the impact of these processes on the structure of bacterial populations has been largely overlooked. The advent of large-scale whole-genome sequencing and the concomitant development of molecular tools, such as microarray technology, facilitate the sensitive detection of recombination events in bacteria. These techniques are revealing that bacterial populations are comprised of isolates that show a surprisingly wide spectrum of genetic diversity at the DNA level. Our new awareness of this genetic diversity is increasing our understanding of population structures and of how these affect host?pathogen relationships. A Study of Using Social Networks to Encourage Three Peers to Complete Screening for Colorectal Cancer

Project description:The Black community has higher rates of colorectal cancer and lower rates of colorectal cancer screenings than whites. Getting screened through FIT testing may help catch colorectal cancer earlier, when it is easier to treat. MSK has created a program to help people who have been FIT tested to also help their peers (family, friends, and colleagues) in their community get FIT tested. The researchers think that training people on peer outreach, such as telling people in your social network about FIT testing and how to get it, may increase the rate of colorectal cancer screening. The purpose of this study is to see if training people on peer outreach increases the number of people who get screened for colorectal cancer through FIT testing.

Project description:This study mapped the genome wide DNA methylation changes in whole blood and buccal swab samples of 2 year old male rhesus monkeys subjected to parental deprivation in their first months of life (surrogate peer-reared condition). Equal numbers of control mother-reared (MR) and surrogate peer-reared (SPR) male monkeys whole blood (5 vs 5) and buccal swab samples (3 vs 3) were analyzed by methylated DNA immunoprecipitation (MeDIP) coupled with promoter tiling arrays.
