¡Salud! Por la Vida (SPLV) A Colorectal Screening Promotion Program

ABSTRACT: The overall goal of this educational program was to increase colorectal cancer screening (CRCS) in men and women who attend Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) in Puerto Rico. FQHCs, referred to in Puerto Rico as "Clínicas 330", are ideal settings to implement innovative approaches to increase CRCS because they serve primarily low-income patients who typically have lower rates of screening. The goal of this study, is to develop and evaluate the impact of a clinic level intervention on increasing CRCS among low-income Puerto Rican men and women aged 50-75, who have either never been screened for colorectal cancer, or are under-screened according recommended guidelines. To evaluate the delivery of the CRCS education program we used a group randomized controlled trial that provided data to determine the effectiveness of the CRC intervention program compared with usual practice (no intervention).

Project description:Individualized analysis through expression profiling of 20,000 probes in 28 tissue samples evaluated in subcutaneous and omental adipose tissue obtained during surgical intervention in non-obese and obese patients. Patients consisted of men and women of varying body size (lean to severely obese). Samples were collected at the time of operation in the fasting state. Samples consisted of subcutaneous and omental adipose tissue as well as a blood sample from lean and obese men and women removed in the fasting state at the time of surgery.

Project description:RATIONALE: Studying the barriers that prevent minority and low-income women from undergoing cancer screening, and offering encouragement to them over the telephone, may help improve cancer screening rates. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II trial is studying how well a telephone-based Prevention Care Manager increases screening rates for breast cancer, cervical cancer, and colorectal cancer in minority and low-income women.

A Smartphone-Based Intervention to Improve Colorectal Cancer Screening in African American Men

Project description:The goal of this clinical trial is to test a new smartphone-based program designed to help African American men get screened for colorectal cancer (CRC). The main question it aims to answer is: ° Are African American men who complete the smartphone-based program more likely to get screened for colorectal cancer than men who do not? Participants will: * Complete a baseline survey asking about their colorectal cancer screening history and their thoughts and beliefs about colorectal cancer and the medical system. * Be randomized to receive the new smartphone-based program or to receive text messages containing colorectal cancer education materials designed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The new program sends text messages with information about colorectal cancer. Some of these text messages have links to videos that try to help men overcome anything that may stand in the way of getting screened. * Complete a follow-up survey 6 months after the baseline survey. This survey will ask the same questions as the baseline survey. * A medical records review will be conducted at 6 months to verify whether participants received a colorectal cancer screening test during the study period. Researchers will compare participants who receive the new smartphone-based program to participants who receive the CDC information. The goal is to see whether the smartphone-based program increasing screening more than standard educational materials available on the internet.

Subfertile women were recruited for this study. They completed an OGTT at baseline and again after completing a very low energy diet intervention.
