In an attempt to map chromosomal regions carrying rare gene variants contributing to the risk of multiple sclerosis (MS), we identified segments shared identical-by-descent (IBD) using the software BEAGLE 4.0's refined IBD analysis. IBD mapping aims at identifying segments inherited from a common ancestor and shared more frequently in case-case pairs. Project description:Recent advances in high throughput sequencing methodologies allow the opportunity to probe in depth the transcriptomes of organisms including N. caninum. In this project, we are using Illumina sequencing technology to analyze the transcriptome (RNA-Seq) of experimentally accessible stages (e.g. tachyzoites at different times points) of N. caninum NCLiv. The aim is to make transcriptional landscape maps at different time points at different life cycle stages of N. caninum and compare it with equivalent datasets from the closely related parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Project description:The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI), Hinxton, Cambridge, UK is a not-for-profit research organisation and a world famous Genome Centre dedicated to the sequencing and functional analysis of genomes. The Sanger Institute underpins biological and medical research worldwide through large-scale analysis, focused research and collaborations. Genome sequence analysis is complemented by computational interpretation and experimental analysis of gene function in a variety of model organisms. There are designated teams for library preparation, sequencing production and data processing. The data centre for computation and data distribution has recently been extended and now has in excess of 4000 terabytes (Tb) of storage space available and a compute farm consisting of almost 5,000 CPUs.

Project description:Trypanosoma vivax is a vector-borne blood parasite of cattle throughout sub-saharan Africa. For some years the genome sequence of this organism has been in development at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and is shortly to be completed. Analysis of the genome has revealed various putative genes encoding unknown proteins. In an effort to validate these features we will sequence mRNA transcripts from the bloodstream stage of the genome strain Y486. Most of the novel gene families identified from the genome sequence are too diverse to be validated individually, i.e. through RT-PCR, so it is necessary to sequence all cellular transcripts. We hope to confirm the transcription of one or all members of the novel gene families from the resulting transcriptome. While essential for the scientific rigour of the present genome project, this transcriptome will also provide an additional resource for the longer-term benefit of the research community. Project description:Abstract: Paired-end sequence data has been generated using polyA selected RNA from a range of zebrafish tissues using the Illumina Genome Analyzer.
