Transcriptional profile of the murine epithelial boundary corresponding to the gastro-esophageal junction


ABSTRACT: Exposure of the gastro-esophageal junction (GEJ) to microenvironmental insults represents a significant risk factor for the induction of metaplastic changes of the esophageal epithelium (Barret’s esophagus) and for initiation of malignant transformation. Little is known about alterations of the genetic programme prior to a pathological manifestation and the use of rodent model systems has been limited due to specific anatomical characteristics. This study was carried out to identify genes that are specifically up-regulated at the mouse squamocolumnar junction (SCJ), the epithelial boundary located at the limiting ridge that separates forestomach and corpus and that is morphologically analogous to the GEJ.
