ABSTRACT: It is well known that tumours can exert direct negative effects on muscle tissue, which can contribute to the development of cancer cachexia. However, the underlying mechanisms and mediators involved in the communication between tumour and skeletal muscle are poorly understood. Cachexia-inducing cancer cell lines are used in both in vivo and in vitro research, they cause cachexia when used in an animal model. In the present study, we investigated the effects of conditioned media (CM) from cachexia-inducing cancer cell lines on differentiating skeletal muscle cells. Muscle-derived C2C12 cells were cultured (3-5 days) under differentiation conditions with CM from KPC, 4662, C26 and LLC cell lines and global gene expression was analysed by RNA sequencing.
