MSCs rescue lethally irradiated mice by differentiation-independent mechanisms


ABSTRACT: Overall survival after irradiation was compared between HSC after single transplantation of MSC. Transplanted MSC did not differentiate into HSC, but salvaged endogeneous hematopoiesis. Overall design: BM, HSC and MSC were isolated from bone marrow 7 months after transplantation with MSCs.

BACKGROUND: Successful treatment of acute radiation syndromes relies on immediate supportive care. In patients with limited hematopoietic recovery potential, hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation is the only curative treatment option.
