Regulation of thin shell traits by SHP based on UPRmt pathway

ABSTRACT: To produce thin shell is one of important goals in breeding, which can effectively solve the practical problems of shelling difficulty and rice broken in grain processing, as a result improves the quality and economic value of products. As a new frontier research field, plant mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt) plays an important role in regulating plant development, reproduction, and senescence. Recently, we have found that mutants with defective mitochondrial translation and wild type plants exposed to doxycycline (Dox) a mitochondrial translation inhibitor induce UPRmt and led to thin shell fruits. Furthermore, a transcription factor SHPs which was found to be a component of UPRmt pathway and regulate the thin shell trait by using high-throughput sequencing and reverse genetics. We will further explore its molecular mechanism through multiomics and molecular biology.
