Gene expression profiles in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and lung cancer

ABSTRACT: Lung cancer and pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) are two common lung diseases with similar symptom, and pre-existing PTB poses an increased lung cancer risk, yet the detailed molecular mechanism is still not clear. The objective of this study was to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of PTB patients, lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) patients, and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) patients providing a basis for further screening of diagnostic and differential diagnostic biomarkers for cancer and PTB, and exploring the potential mechanisms by which PTB patients increase the risk of lung cancer. Expression profiles of lncRNAs and mRNAs in PBMCs from PTB, LUAD, and LUSC patients were characterized by microarray assay and six DEGs were selected for validation using reverse transcription real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway based approaches were used to investigate potential biological functions and pathways signaling pathways enriched by the DEGs.
