Transcriptional footprints associated with bud fertility in grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.): a developmental study

ABSTRACT: Flowering is the most important process in plants and understanding the mechanism controlling its timing and abundance is pivotal especially for crops, which are continuously challenged by biotic and abiotic factors. Data regarding the physiology of flowering in grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) are fragmentary and distributed over several decades, so it is necessary to provide an updated overview of the different molecular mechanism involved in the transformation of the meristems into flowering structures. In the present study, we adopted transcriptomics (RNA-Seq) to identify the determinants of fertility in the worldwide diffused cultivar Merlot. After assessing the actual fertility over a period of three years, bud samples were collected from different position along the shoot and their transcriptome studied at three phenological stages
