Immunomodulatory Activity of Flagellin on Human Respiratory Epithelium

ABSTRACT: Bacterial flagellin, a Toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5) agonist, has been shown to stimulate innate immune defenses when delivered via the respiratory route, and airway epithelial cells. This study aimed to characterize the immunomodulatory effects of flagellin on human primary respiratory epithelium using RNA sequencing. Using the MucilAir air-liquid interface model, we studied how apical administration of flagellin regulated gene expression in airway epithelial cells derived from healthy individuals, as well as patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis (CF).
