Transcriptomic changes in human AC16 cardiomyocytes induced by electronic cigarette aerosol exposure

ABSTRACT: Electronic cigarette (e-cig) use has raised increasing concerns regarding its cardiovascular effects, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms in cardiomyocytes remain unclear. In this study, human AC16 cardiomyocytes were exposed to e-cigarette aerosol using an air–liquid interface system, and transcriptomic profiling was performed to identify differentially expressed miRNAs and mRNAs. The analysis revealed marked alterations in calcium signaling–related genes, most notably suppression of miR-6504-3p and upregulation of its target gene PLN, providing mechanistic insight into e-cig–induced cardiomyocyte injury.
