Project description:End stage heart failure due to ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) have similar characteristics, enlargement of the ventricles, relatively thin-walled ventricle, which leads to a limited contraction force and blood loading. Nevertheless, the response for present therapeutics is very variable and the prognosis is still very bad for ICM and DCM in general. Thus, the ability to differentiate the etiologies of heart failure based structural and physiological changes of the heart would be a step forward to enhance the specificity and the success of given therapy.

Project description:The mechanisms underlying the balancing of circulatory demands against changes in cellular homeostasis and cell death/survival signaling in heart muscle disease are still not fully understood. We employed the ABI high-density oligonucleotide microarrays containing 31,700 sixty-mer oligonucleotide probes (representing 27,868 individual human genes) to determine differential gene expression in idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) (n=5) compared to normal controls (n=4), in order to systematically characterize disease-induced alterations in gene expression that may provide a basis for deciphering such mechanisms.
