A number of studies have demonstrated that <i>Babesia orientalis</i> (<i>B. orientalis</i>) can only infect water buffalo (<i>Bubalus bubalis</i>) and not dairy cattle (<i>Bos taurus</i>) or beef cattle (<i>Bos taurus</i>), even though all three belong to the tribe <i>Bovini</i> and have close evolutionary relationships.
