Activity based proteome profiling of honeybee brain

ABSTRACT: The honeybee's brain is a plastic organ that changes its physiological properties in response to internal and external stimuli to perform certain tasks depending on age. In honeybee workers, these age-related behavioral changes are closely related to changes in brain structure, gene expression, and protein synthesis. High royal jelly-producing bees (RJBs), a stock of honeybees selected from Italian bees (ITBs), have developed a stronger ability to produce royal jelly (RJ) than ITBs. However, the behavioral, physiological, and molecular basis of this high RJ secretion in RJBs is not yet well known. To gain new insights into the molecular basis of the behavior of augmented RJ secretion in RJBs compared to ITBs, we used activity-based proteome profiling in brain was compared between the two strains.
