Project description:Over the last 60 years, marine natural products have had major economic and commercial importance. The development of a National Marine Biodiscovery Laboratory in Ireland (NMBLI), located at the Marine Institute (Oranmore), aims to strengthen Ireland’s capacity as research leaders in marine biotechnology and in particularly marine natural products chemistry. The NMBLI houses an Irish marine repository derived from marine macro-organisms collected in Irish coastal waters. The aim of this project is to collect organisms for the marine repository and identify samples of interest for chemical investigation. Other than the development of the laboratory at the marine institute (Oranmore) with the appropriate facilities and procedure to undertake biodiscovery research, the outcomes of this project are to identify bioactive marine natural products from Irish marine life.

Inter-species array between human, rat and mouse

Project description:We propose a new microarray method, called an inter-species array, that can measure gene expression levels of multiple species at once. As the array operates simply by changing the probes on an Agilent commercial customized array, and conventional facilities and protocols can be used, the method is cost-efficient. We generated an array for humans, rats and mice that covers 6683 genes. The number of genes is larger than that of previous arrays. We measured the expression of genes in astrocyte cells for humans and rats, and in cortex cells for rats and mice.

Array CGH of interspecific hybrid yeasts using multi-species array platform

Project description:Four hybrid yeast strains isolated from a variety of industrial substrates were hybridized to an array-CGH platform containing probes to query the whole genomes of seven different Saccharomyces species. For most of the strains we found evidence of multiple interspecific hybridization events and multiple introgressed regions. The strains queried were GSY205 (isolated from a cider fermentation), GSY505 (a contaminant from a lager beer fermentation), GSY2232 (a commercial wine yeast strain), and GSY312 (a commercial lager beer strain). Additionally, 3 different rare viable spores derived from laboratory-created interspecific S. cerevisiae-S. bayanus (aka S. uvarum) hybrids were queried, before and after evolution in chemostats, via S. cerevisiae-S. bayanus microarrays.
