ABSTRACT: The rupture of atherosclerotic plaque contributes significantly to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Plasma concentrations of bilirubin, a by-product of heme catabolism, inversely associate with risk of CVD, although the link between bilirubin and atherosclerosis remains unclear.
