Mitochondrial homeostasis is maintained through complex regulatory mechanisms, including the balance of mitochondrial dynamics involving fusion and fission processes. A central player in this regulation is the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS), which controls the degradation of pivotal mitochondrial proteins.
