A conserved cysteine-to-serine modification in insulin generates neoepitope-specific CD4 T-cell responses in diabetic autoimmunity

ABSTRACT: We identified a T1D-relevant insulin neoantigen in which C19 of the insulin B chain is converted to serine. This neoantigen is conserved between human and mouse and is recognized by a specific, more highly activated T cell population. We demonstrated that this conversion happens at the protein level as a result of oxidative stress.
