ABSTRACT: Chemical innovation is essential for fungi to adapt to ever-changing environments. However, the role of genetic and environmental interactions in driving fungal metabolic differentiation remains ambiguous. Here, we studied the phylogeographic diversity of a panel of 1,052 Aspergillus flavus strains across four continents, including 544 newly sequenced strains from China that revealed new global subpopulations. The population diversity of A. flavus shows strong phylogeographic metabolic patterns, with different clades being associated with specific environments.
