Blood-stage <i>Plasmodium falciparum</i> parasites rely on a non-photosynthetic plastid, the apicoplast, for survival, making it an attractive target for antimalarial intervention. Like the mitochondrion, the apicoplast cannot be generated <i>de novo</i> and must be inherited by daughter parasites during cell division.
