Metabolomic analysis of the Portuguese man-of-war

ABSTRACT:

Understanding the toxicity of the Portuguese man-of-war, Physalia physalis is of paramount importance, given its important ecological role and potential threats to human health and other organisms. The tentacles of P. physalis are quite distinct from those of other jellyfish, in that two distinct sizes of nematocysts are located on only one side of the tentacular palpons. To investigate the composition of the toxins or venom of P. physalis, a comprehensive metabolomic analysis of the tentacular palpons was conducted to identify the toxic metabolites present in P. physalis.
