Gut symbiotic bacteria-derived nicotinic acid regulates Bactrocera dorsalis reproduction

ABSTRACT:

Depletion of gut commensal bacteria significantly reduced nicotinic acid (NA) levels in the hemolymph and ovaries of Bactrocera dorsalis, leading to impaired ovarian development. This inhibition was reversed by exogenous NA supplementation. We identified Enterobacter hormaechei as a key NA-producing gut symbiont. Recolonization with E. hormaechei restored NA levels in both the hemolymph and ovaries, thereby rescuing ovarian development in B. dorsalis.
