The mechanism of vascular injury caused by polystyrene microplastics: A molecular toxicology study involving ferroptosis and metabolomics

ABSTRACT:

Background: Polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) are degradation products of plastics that are prevalent in the environment. Recent studies have established a significant correlation between exposure to PS-MPs and the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Objective: This study aims to investigate the specific mechanisms underlying the vascular toxicity effects of exposure to environmental polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) in mice. Conclusion: The findings of our research indicate that exposure to PS-MPs leads to vascular toxicity, which is marked by injury and dysfunction of the vascular endothelial. This phenomenon is potentially driven by oxidative stress, ferroptosis, and metabolic disturbances. Importantly, administration of Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) significantly alleviates vascular endothelial injury and reduces vascular remodeling, thereby improving vascular endothelial dysfunction.
