Bile Acid Metabolomic Profiling of a Three-Member Synthetic Microbial Consortium
Ontology highlight
ABSTRACT: This study investigated bile acid metabolism by a defined three-member synthetic microbial consortium consisting of Clostridium scindens, Eubacterium limosum, and Eggerthella lenta. Four experimental groups were established: G1, a sterile control; G2, C. scindens alone; G3, C. scindens and E. limosum; and G4, all three bacterial species. Glycocholic acid (GCA) and taurocholic acid (TCA) were supplied as bile acid substrates. Samples were collected from independent cultures at 36 and 60 hours, with three biological replicates per group and time point (24 cultures in total). Mass spectrometry data were generated to characterize bile acid transformation across the microbial combinations, with particular interest in deconjugation, 7α-dehydroxylation, and downstream bile acid modifications.
