Project description:NPI enriched more down-regulation genes involved in starch and sucrose metabolism, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis pathway, leading to restricted root growth. Three GO terms including channel activity, water transport, and water channel activity caused a high degree of gene enrichment. Thirteen genes related to water absorption and transport such as ZM00001D003006, ZM00001D014285 et al. were highly up-regulated, which might be the key genes for the significant increase in water use efficiency of maize under negative pressure irrigation.

Wheat growth, applied water use efficiency and flag leaf metabolome under continuous and pulsed deficit irrigation

Project description:<p>The intensity and frequency of precipitation events are predicted to change over the coming decades. For many areas, longer periods without rainfall are expected. We investigated the importance of irrigation frequency under water deficit conditions for growth, physiology and chemistry of wheat (<em>Triticum aestivum</em>). Drought-stressed plants received 40% of the water provided for control plants and were either watered every other day (continuous drought, cd) or every eight days (pulsed drought, pd). Maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), aboveground biomass, applied water use efficiency (WUEapl) and the flag leaf metabolome were assessed twice during development. Fv/Fm was not affected by irrigation. Drought-exposed plants produced less biomass, but had higher WUEapl than control plants. More metabolic features responded to the pd compared to the cd treatment and more features were increased than decreased in pool size in flag leaves. Salicylic acid glucoside was generally decreased under drought. In pd plants, two benzoxazinoid glucosides were enhanced at the first time point and concentrations of several flavonoid glycosides were modulated. This study extends our knowledge about drought effects on wheat; it highlights that the frequency of watering determines how plant growth, physiology and metabolism are affected by drought.</p>

Project description:Transcriptional profiling of three mexican maize landraces under 10, and 17 days stress and recovery irrigation A dye balanced modified loop design was implemented. Two biological replicates (pooling five representative plants) representing each sampling point for each genotype were obtained for purified RNA from 120 randomly chosen seedlings. This experiment involved a total of forty-eight (24 sets) of microarray hybridizations, including direct and dye swap comparisons between treatments as well as across the three landraces. This design allowed us to determine differences in gene expression between the three different landraces under drought stress (10 and 17 days) and at recovery irrigation compared to irrigated controls.

Grape berry developmental series comparing irrigation treatments in a vineyard in Wingara, Victoria, Australia (WIN-05)

Project description:Changes in gene expression during berry development during a grape growing season were analysed. The effect on gene expression of different viticultural practises during grape berry development was investigated in this study by comparing two irrigation methods (standard versus prolonged deficit irrigation). Grape berries were collected and pooled on a weekly basis to obtaining a developmental series comprising of 17 developmental stages from flowering until harvest across the grape growing season for both standard and prolonged deficit irrigated vines. Blood pressure changes PVAT function and transcriptome: use of the mid-thoracic aorta coarcted rat

Project description:A mid-thoracic aorta coarcted rat was created to generate a stable pressure difference above versus below the coarctation ligature. This study determined that the PVAT around the thoracic aorta exposed to a higher pressure has a significantly reduced ability to assist stress relaxation versus that below the ligature and appears to retain the ability to be anticontractile. At the same time, the PVAT around the thoracic aorta exposed to higher pressure had a reduced adipogenic potential versus that below the ligature. Transcriptomics analyses indicated that PVAT below the coarctation showed the greatest number of DEGs with an increased profile of the synaptic neurotransmitter gene network.
