MCF7 proteome of cells and EVs during starvation

ABSTRACT: Serum deprivation during cell culture is common in EV research in oder to omit the introduction of xeno-EV material and reduce the presence of contaminating non-EV proteins from bovine serum. However, starvation has a profound effect on the cell proteome. Here, we provide proteome data that shows large differences on the cellular proteome of starved cells and how this is reflected in secreted EV particles of the corresponding cells.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), membrane-delimited nanovesicles that are secreted by cells into the extracellular environment, are gaining substantial interest due to their involvement in cellular homeostasis and their contribution to disease pathology. The latter in particular has led to an exponential increase in interest in EVs as they are considered to be circulating packages containing potential biomarkers and are also a possible biological means to deliver drugs in a cell-specific manner.
