Crude extract of a novel actinomycete Streptomyces sp. PSRA5 isolated from Panax sokpayensis.

ABSTRACT: An actinomycete, Streptomyces sp. PSRA5 was isolated from Panax sokpayensis, a medicinal plant of the Sikkim Himalayas. It was found to have antimicrobial activity against multi-drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The crude extract of the actinomycete was extracted and analysed.

Endophytic actinomycetes of medicinal plants have recently been in focus for developing novel antimicrobial compounds to combat multidrug-resistant pathogens. In this study, we isolated and characterised endophytic actinomycetes of Panax sokpayensis rhizome traditionally used as medicine in Sikkim-Himalayan region and assessed their antimicrobial activity against multidrug-resistant (MDR) clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus. Saccharopolyspora dominated as the endophytic actinomycetes of P  ...[more]
