Deciphering the proteomic profile of the parasite Fasciola hepatica during host migration reveals new insights into early-stage infection

ABSTRACT: The project presents an in vivo mouse model coupled with quantitative SWATH-MS proteomics to study the early stages of Fasciola hepatica migration, focusing on the parasite's passage through the intestinal barrier to peritoneum(24 hours post-infection) and migration to the liver parenchyma (8 days post-infection). This approach aims to assess the proteomic changes in the parasite during these critical stages of infection.

The migration of the trematode parasite Fasciola hepatica within its vertebrate host following infection by ingestion of the metacercariae represents a critical event in its establishment and survival. The early stages of infection, during which F. hepatica crosses the intestinal barrier and advances to the liver through the peritoneum, initiate changes in the parasite that drive its development from a free-living state on pasture to an obligate blood-feeding parasite. Using an in vivo mouse mod  ...[more]
