Proteome and secretome characterization of penile carcinoma cells

ABSTRACT: Representing a rare malignant disease, penile cancer (PeCa) occurs in 0.4 - 0.6 % of male neoplasias in Europe and the USA. With more than 95 %, most PeCa are of squamous cell origin and can be further distinguished based on their HPV-status. This study aimed at elucidating the secretome and proteome of newly established PeCa cell lines to identify biomarker and putative therapeutic targets, respectively.

Penile carcinoma (PeCa) is a rare malignancy occurring in men. Treatment typically involves penectomy, radiation, or cisplatin-based chemotherapy. A paclitaxel, ifosfamide, and cisplatin-based regimen achieves response rates around 65%. However, non-responders face a 5-year survival rate of only 8%, and due to its rarity, it is mediocrely characterized. Thus, an in-depth delineation of PeCa is crucial to identify novel therapeutic targets. Newly established primary human PeCa cell lines and corr  ...[more]
