Regulation of IL-13 signaling by Retinoic Acid in Airway Epithelial Cells

ABSTRACT: Dysregulated vitamin A signaling, involving reduced retinoic acid (RA), is associated with asthma severity, and RA supplementation may provide benefits in asthma. However, the molecular changes induced by activation of RA receptor (RAR) agonists in airway cells are not well established. Allergen-induced Th2 cytokines, such as interleukin-13 (IL-13), modulate the structure and function of airway epithelial cells, a cell type that plays a central role in asthma. This study investigates the effects of RAR agonists on IL-13-induced pathological changes in lung epithelial cells using mass spectrometry. A549 alveolar epithelial and BEAS-2B bronchial epithelial cells were treated with IL-13 in the presence of ATRA (pan-RAR agonist) or CD1530 (RARγ agonist).
