Orange juice intake and anthropometric changes in children and adolescents.

Project description:ObjectiveEvaluate associations between orange juice (OJ) consumption and anthropometric parameters.DesignProspective cohort study assessing the association between OJ intake and changes in BMI and height-for-age Z-score (HAZ) using mixed linear regression.Setting2004-2008, USA.ParticipantsChildren from the Growing Up Today Study II (n 7301), aged 9-16 years at enrollment.ResultsOJ consumption was positively associated with 2-year change in HAZ in girls (mean (se)): 0·03 (0·01) for non-consumers, 0·03 (0·02) for 1-3 glasses/month, 0·06 (0·01) for 1-6 glasses/week and 0·09 (0·02) for ≥1 glass/d after full adjustment (Ptrend = 0·02). However, OJ consumption was not associated with 2-year change in BMI percentile (kg/m2, mean (se)): -0·44 (0·36) for non-consumers, 0·20 (0·41) for 1-3 glasses/month, -0·04 (0·34) for 1-6 glasses/week and -0·77 (0·62) for ≥1 glass/d in girls, Ptrend = 0·81; -0·94 (0·53) for non-consumers, -1·68 (0·52) for 1-3 glasses/month, -0·81 (0·38) for 1-6 glasses per week and -1·12 (0·61) for ≥1 glass/d in boys, Ptrend = 0·49.ConclusionOJ consumption was favourably associated with height growth but unrelated to excess weight gain. OJ may be a useful alternative to whole fruit in the event that whole fruit intake is insufficient.

Organic vegetable juice supplement modulates microbial community in continuous colon simulation system

Project description:In this study, we investigated the effects of organic vegetable juice supplementation on modulating the microbial community, and how its consumption ameliorates blood lipid profiles in diet-induced obese mice. Here, we analyzed the effect of organic vegetable juice on the microbial community and fatty acid synthesis via animal experiments using diet-induced obese mice and continuous colon simulation system. Organic vegetable juice supplement influenced intestinal bacterial composition from phylum to genus level, including decreased Proteobacteria in the ascending colon in the phylum. At the family level, Akkermansia which are associated with obesity, were significantly augmented in the transverse colon and descending colon compared to the control juice group. In addition, treatment with organic vegetable juice affected predicted lipid metabolism function genes related to lipid synthesis. Organic vegetable juice consumption did not have a significant effect on weight loss but helped reduce epididymis fat tissue and adipocytes. Additionally, blood lipid profiles, such as triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein, and glucose, were improved in the organic vegetable juice-fed group. Expression levels of genes related to lipid synthesis, including SREBP-1, PPARγ, C/EBPα, and Fas, were significantly decreased. Analysis of antioxidant markers, including 8-OHdG and MDA, in the vegetable juice group, indicated that blood lipid profiles were improved by the antioxidant effect. These results suggest that organic vegetable juice supplementation may modulate gut microbial community and reduce the potential role of hyperlipidemia in diet-obese mice.

Microarray Based Analysis of the Developing Sweet Orange Transcriptome

Project description:Using a custom microarray platform, we examined expression of 366 genes in leaf, two peel tissues, juice sac, and whole fruit during various developmental stages of Washington Navel orange fruit (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck). 366 genes were chosen from Citrus EST libraries by in-silico analysis method. Keywords: time course and tissue comparison Study to compare gene expression between peel layers and over time as fruit matured. Samples taken from leaf tissue, whole fruit at 24 and 38 days after full bloom (DAFB), and from albedo and flavedo layers of the peel at 80 and 165 DAFB, and flavedo from mature fruit at 220 DAFB. In all cases except one, there were three technical replicates hybridized for each Sample simultaneously.

Project description:Analysis of the effect of using a fruit and vegetable juice concentrate to reduce systemic inflammation in obesity. The hypothesis tested whether the presence of polyphenols in the fruit and vegetable juice concentrate could reduce the expression of systemic inflammatory genes in the blood of Obese patients with high levels of plasma CRP (≥3.0). Results provide evidence that systemic inflammatory genes/ and or pathways may be modulated by the fruit and vegetable juice concentrate.
