Ozonation of Selected Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products in Secondary Effluent-Degradation Kinetics and Environmental Assessment.

Project description:The efficiency of ozonation depends on the water matrix and the reaction time. Herein, these factors were addressed by assessing the removal of five pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) by ozonation. The main aims were: (i) to assess the effects of the water matrix on the degradation kinetics of PPCPs, individually and in mixture, following ozonation; and (ii) to assess the ecotoxicological impact of the ozone reaction time on the treatment of a spiked municipal wastewater (MW) added the five PPCPs over several species. The degradation of the PPCPs was faster in ultrapure water, with all PPCPs being removed in 20 min, whereas in the MW, a 30 min ozonation period was required to achieve a removal close to 100%. Increasing the number of PPCPs in the water matrix did not affect the time required for their removal in the MW. Regarding the ecotoxicity assessment, Raphidocelis&nbsp;subcapitata and Daphnia magna were the least sensitive species, whereas Lemna minor was the most sensitive. The temporal variation of the observed effects corroborates the degradation of the added PPCPs and the formation of toxic degradation by-products. The removal of the parent compounds did not guarantee decreased hazardous potential to biological species.

Project description:Almost all aspects of society from food security to disease control and prevention have benefited from pharmaceutical and personal care products, yet these products are a major source of contamination that ends up in wastewater and ecosystems. This issue has been sharply accentuated during the coronavirus disease pandemic 2019 (COVID-19) due to the higher use of disinfectants and other products. Technical Failure During Colorectal Endoscopic Full Thickness Resection (EFTR): The "Through Thick and Thin" Study

Project description:Among advanced resection techniques, endoscopic full thickness resection (EFTR) allows closure and full-thickness resection by the use of the non-exposed full thickness resection device (FTRD). The study is a retrospective analysis of technical failure occurring during colorectal full-thickness resection. Full thickness resection is a safe and effective procedure for "difficult" colorectal lesions. However, technical failure can occur and to date there is no evidence about type and clinical consequences in this setting.

Performance Comparison of Different Constructed Wetlands Designs for the Removal of Personal Care Products.

Project description:This research investigates the performance of four types of constructed wetlands (CWs): free water surface CW (FWSCW), horizontal flow CW (HFCW), vertical flow CW (VFCW), and hybrid CW (HCW) for the removal of 20 personal care products (PCPs), based on secondary data compiled for 137 CWs reported in 39 peer reviewed journal papers. In spite of considerable variation in the re-moval efficiency of PCPs, CWs prove to be a promising treatment technology. The average removal efficiency of 15 widely studied PCPs ranged from 9.0% to 84%. Although CWs effectively reduced the environmental risks caused by many PCPs, triclosan was still classified under high risk category based on effluent concentration. Five other PCPs were classified under medium risk category (triclocarban > methylparaben > galaxolide > oxybenzone > methyl dihydrojasmonate). In most of the examined PCPs, adsorption and/or sorption is the most common removal mechanism followed by biodegradation and plant uptake. The comparatively better performance of HCW followed by VFCW, HFCW, and FWSCW might be due to the co-existence of aerobic and anaerobic conditions, and longer hydraulic retention time enhancing the removal of PCPs (e.g., triclosan, methyl dihydro-jasmonate, galaxolide, tonalide, and oxybenzone), which are removed under both conditions and by adsorption/sorption processes.

Nanoplastics and sunscreens contained in personal care products induce neurotoxicity in early zebrafish embryos

Project description:Nanoplastics with small particle size and high surface area/volume ratio make them easy to absorb environmental pollutants and affect their bioavailability. In this study, polystyrene nanoplastic beads (PS-NPBs) with a particle size of 100nm and sunscreen butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane (BMDBM) contained in personal care products were chosen as target pollutants to study their developmental toxicity and interactive effects on zebrafish embryo. The exposure period was 2-12 hours post fertilization (hpf). The BMDBM and PS-NPBs significantly upregulated the genes related to antioxidant enzymes and downregulated the gene expression of aromatase and DNA methyltransferases, but the influenced genes were not exactly the same, and the combined exposure reduced the adverse effects on the expression of all genes. With the help of single-cell RNA sequencing technology, the neural mid cells were identified as the target cells of both pollutants, and brain development, head development and notch signaling pathway were the functions they commonly altered. The key genes and functions that are specifically affected by BMDBM and/or PS-NPBs were identified. The BMDBM mainly affect the differentiation and fate of neurons in central nervous system through the regulation of her5, her6, her11, lfng, pax2a and fgfr4. The PS-NPBs regulated the expression of olig2, foxg1a, fzd8b, six3a, rx1, lhx2b, nkx2.1a and sfrp5 to alter nervous system development, retinal development, and stem cell differentiation. The phenotypic responses of zebrafish larvae at 120 hpf were tested, and significant inhibition of locomotor activity was found, indicating that early disrupting effect on central nervous system would have a sustained impact on the behavior of zebrafish.
