Selective extinction against redundant species buffers functional diversity.

Project description:The extinction of species can destabilize ecological processes. A way to assess the ecological consequences of species loss is by examining changes in functional diversity. The preservation of functional diversity depends on the range of ecological roles performed by species, or functional richness, and the number of species per role, or functional redundancy. However, current knowledge is based on short timescales and an understanding of how functional diversity responds to long-term biodiversity dynamics has been limited by the availability of deep-time, trait-based data. Here, we compile an exceptional trait dataset of fossil molluscs from a 23-million-year interval in the Caribbean Sea (34 011 records, 4422 species) and develop a novel Bayesian model of multi-trait-dependent diversification to reconstruct mollusc (i) diversity dynamics, (ii) changes in functional diversity, and (iii) extinction selectivity over the last 23 Myr. Our results identify high diversification between 23-5 Mya, leading to increases in both functional richness and redundancy. Conversely, over the last three million years, a period of high extinction rates resulted in the loss of 49% of species but only 3% of functional richness. Extinction rates were significantly higher in small, functionally redundant species suggesting that competition mediated the response of species to environmental change. Taken together, our results identify long-term diversification and selective extinction against redundant species that allowed functional diversity to grow over time, ultimately buffering the ecological functions of biological communities against extinction.

Vein and Intervein Drought RNAseq

Project description:We report here the RNAseq data generated from a drought experiment using tomato leaves (Solanum lycopersicum), in which three timepoints and two treatments were collected. More specifically, RNAseq was generated from tomato plants prior to drought (T0), during a period of drought (T1) and after a period of recovery from drought (T2). At timepoints 1 and 2 (T1 & T2), a control set of plants that were continuously watered are also included. Furthermore, at each timepoint, each leaf was dissected into two parts, including the vein and intervein. The samples are therefore named as Tissue/Timepoint/Treatment, and include VT0W (vein, T0, watered), VT1W (vein, T1, watered), VT1D (vein, T1, drought), VT2D, VT2W and IVT0W (intervein, T0, Watered), IVT1D, IVT1W, IVT2D, IVT2W. Note that VT2D and IVT2D, while named "drought", were actually recovered from drought.

Native diversity buffers against severity of non-native tree invasions.

Project description:Determining the drivers of non-native plant invasions is critical for managing native ecosystems and limiting the spread of invasive species1,2. Tree invasions in particular have been relatively overlooked, even though they have the potential to transform ecosystems and economies3,4. Here, leveraging global tree databases5-7, we explore how the phylogenetic and functional diversity of native tree communities, human pressure and the environment influence the establishment of non-native tree species and the subsequent invasion severity. We find that anthropogenic factors are key to predicting whether a location is invaded, but that invasion severity is underpinned by native diversity, with higher diversity predicting lower invasion severity. Temperature and precipitation emerge as strong predictors of invasion strategy, with non-native species invading successfully when they are similar to the native community in cold or dry extremes. Yet, despite the influence of these ecological forces in determining invasion strategy, we find evidence that these patterns can be obscured by human activity, with lower ecological signal in areas with higher proximity to shipping ports. Our global perspective of non-native tree invasion highlights that human drivers influence non-native tree presence, and that native phylogenetic and functional diversity have a critical role in the establishment and spread of subsequent invasions.

Project description:In order to understand the mechanisms of Drought induced susceptibility (DIS) we’ve conducted a dual RNAseq experiment on rice infected tissues by Magnaporthe oryzae. At 4 days post inoculation tissues have been collected on mock inoculated and M. oryzae inoculated plants. Rice were conducted under two type of water regime: DIS Drought during three days before inoculation, NoDIS no drought before inoculation. RNAseq was conducted both on rice and fungal RNA.

Project description:Genome-wide Transcriptional Analysis of Genes Associated with Drought Stress in Gossypium herbaceum root This experiment was designed to investigate the molecular mechanism associated with drought tolerance in root tissue of Gossypium herbaceum. The gene expression profiles of the root tissue using Affymetrix Cotton Genome Array were compared with drought tolerant and drought sensitive genotype of G.herbaceum under drought stress and watered condition. Many genes in various molecular function or biological processes were over- or under-represented between drought tolerant and sensitive genotype, suggesting various molecular mechanism and biochemical pathways are interlinked and tolerant genotype have developed multiple mechanisms as an adaptory behavior against drought stress.
