Project description:The Bombyx mori parental strains Lat21 and B221 from the Department of Science and Technology - Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR) Sericulture Facility in La Trinidad, Benguet are crossed to produce the hybrids NC144 (Lat21♀ X B221♂) and CN144 (B221♀ X Lat21♂). These hybrids exhibited heterosis in field studies conducted in the 1980s. This study aims to provide evidence for the observed heterosis in the molecular basis for heterosis in B. mori hybrids NC144 and CN144 through RNA sequencing of whole silkworm larvae. Withe the sequencing data, it was possible to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) among: 1) the parental strains and their hybrids, and 2) the two hybrids. DESeq2 found 384 DEGs in the hybrids (reference: Parents; 202 upregulated, 182 downregulated) and 819 DEGs in NC144 (reference: CN144; 66 upregulated, 753 downregulated). Amon these are DEGs encoding for heat shock proteins and antimicrobial peptides, which have potentials use as markers for marker-assisted breeding. Additionally, the inducible nature of these genes in the presence of stressors like extreme temperature and bacteria, suggests that they could also be used as diagnostic tools for stress assessment.
Project description:Background: Probiotic-like bacteria treatment has been described to be associated with gut microbiota modifications. Goal: To decipher if the effects of the tested probiotic-like bacteria are due to the bacteria itself or due to the effects of the bacteria on the gut microbiota. Methodology: In this study, gut microbiota has been analyzed from feces samples of subjects with metabolic syndrome and treated with one of the 2 tested probiotic-like bacteria or with the placebo during 3months.
Project description:Investigating the origins of sericulture is challenging, as classification of silks by species is currently technically difficult. Here we investigate a range of methods for solubilizing modern and archaeological silks and demonstrate a protocol using mass spectrometry-based proteomics to successfully differentiate modern samples of Bombyx, Antheraea, and Samia -produced silks matching samples to species level. We also analyzed archaeological silks from excavations at the ancient city of Palmyra, Syria, and provide evidence that these silks were produced by A. mylitta, which is the first direct evidence supporting the production and trade of Indian wild silk in antiquity.
Project description:Here we report 16s rRNA data in gut microbiota of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with HBV induced HCC (HBVC) and non-HBV induced HCC (NHBVC) compared with healthy volunteers. A total of 2047 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified in the sequence data. Our data shows that the NHBVC patients harbor lower anti-inflammatory bacteria and more pro-inflammatory bacteria, while the HBVC patients harbor more anti-inflammatory bacteria.
Project description:The aim of this experiment was to determine if the development of resistance to antibiotics can be driven by the concentration and speciation of Cu. Experimental setup was designed to investigate two hypotheses for which two strains of Gram- bacteria have been selected: - Do TE enhance AR in resistant bacteria? Resistant strain: Bioluminescent Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 (Xen41, Tetracycline resistant) - Do TE induce AR in sensitive bacteria? Sensitive strain: Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 (Wild Type)
