Bacillus licheniformis promotes the enrichment of Prevotella improving levels of nicotinamide in alleviating colitis

Project description:<p>This study investigated the effects of Bacillus licheniformis supplementation on the gut metabolic profile of patients with mild-to-moderate active ulcerative colitis (UC). Patients received either mesalazine alone or mesalazine combined with Bacillus licheniformis. Fecal samples were collected and subjected to untargeted LC-MS/MS metabolomics analysis. Bacillus licheniformis intervention was associated with alterations in the gut microbiota and metabolite profiles, including enrichment of Prevotella and increased levels of nicotinamide (NAM). Multi-omics analysis indicated a close relationship between Prevotella abundance and NAM metabolism. Further experimental validation suggested that Bacillus licheniformis interacts with Prevotella through bacterial cross-feeding, contributing to increased NAM production and activation of the Wnt signaling pathway. These findings provide evidence for a potential Bacillus licheniformis–Prevotella–nicotinamide–Wnt axis involved in the alleviation of ulcerative colitis.</p>
